The Prosecutor’s Office will file charges against 14 members of the FAE for the alleged crime of sabotage

The Prosecutor’s Office requested a date and time for the hearing to formulate charges against fourteen members of the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) for alleged participation in the crime of sabotage.

The entity reported that this request is made in relation to the destruction of the radar on Montecristi hill. The radar was placed in that area to control illegal drug trafficking activities.

In the early hours of Sunday, November 7, 2021, a large part of the inhabitants of the urban area of ​​Montecristi heard a sound similar to an explosion, which originated on the hill of this city. That day, the authorities of the Ecuadorian Air Force recognized that there was a problem.

On Monday, November 8, Luis Hernández —then Minister of Defense— visited the top of the hill, where he verified the damage. After that inspection, the start of investigations was announced to find out what happened at dawn.

The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the fourteen soldiers who will be charged were part of the team assigned to the security and patrol of Montecristi hill. The uniformed men were there the day the surveillance system installed in the place was destroyed.

For its part, the FAE also set administrative sanctions for 16 officers and 9 aerotechnicians; some were relieved of duties and others arrested. An officer asked for discharge. (YO)
