Anti-government protests in Peru have killed at least 4 people and injured 38 others. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Ministry of Health of the country.
“The Ministry of Health informs that so far 8 hospitalized, 30 discharged from the hospital and 4 dead during demonstrations in various regions of the country have been reported,” the ministry’s page on the social network says.
Earlier it was reported about three dead. According to radio station RPP, the fourth victim of the clashes was a demonstration in the province of Chincheros in the department of Apurimac. In the same area, a group of protesters attacked a police station.
Protests in Peru began after the removal of Pedro Castillo from the post of head of state last week. In Arequipa, demonstrators seized the airport. The new president, Dina Boluarte, declared a state of emergency in the departments of Apurimac, Arequipa and Ica, where the highest level of protest activity was noted. At the same time, she proposed to hold early elections in April 2024, saying that she would submit the relevant bill to the Congress (unicameral parliament).
On December 7, the Peruvian Congress decided to remove President Castillo, which was supported by two-thirds of the members of Parliament. The head of state was accused of corruption, he was impeached due to “permanent moral incapacity.”
