In Brazil, supporters of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro rioted on the streets of the capital. It is reported by TASS with reference to the publication Metropoles.

According to the publication, the demonstrators were going to enter the headquarters of the Brazilian Federal Police, protesting against the detention of their colleague, one of the leaders of the country’s indigenous peoples. After police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse them, they damaged and set fire to more than a dozen cars parked nearby and several city buses.

It is reported that demonstrators blocked roads and erected obstacles from burning tires.

Brazilian Minister of Justice and Public Security Anderson Torres urged the rioters to “common sense”.

“Now is a very delicate moment that requires common sense on the part of all parties involved in terms of respecting the law, maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of people,” he said.

The Minister also stated that the Federal Police, subordinate to the Ministry of Justice of the country, is in contact with the security services of the capital Federal District, which will be provided with all the necessary assistance “in counteracting vandals.”

As specified, the reason for the arrest of the Bolsonaro sympathetic Indian leader was the fact that he, along with other tribesmen, illegally entered the departure hall of the international airport in Brasilia last week, protesting against the results of the presidential elections held in October. According to their results, the rival of the incumbent conservative president, the socialist Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, was elected the new head of state.

Earlier it was reported that Lula da Silva won in the second round with just under 51% of the vote, his rival, incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro, received just over 49%.

For Lula da Silva, this is the third victory in the presidential elections. He led the country from 2003 to 2011. From 2017 to 2019, he was serving a prison sentence for corruption and laundering, but in 2021, the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil canceled all charges against him.
