Alexis Cogul and his world-class architectural stamp

Miami is a young city and in the process of growth at an architectural level, it is the perfect canvas for urban development. There, an architect who has lived in South Florida for several decades stands out, who from his studies in Coconut Grove and in his native Barcelona fuses his art in each project he designs, bringing a European sensibility to this young, tropical and diverse city. where different cultures are combined in which there is a lot of potential to develop in terms of design and architecture.

This is Alexis Cogul Lleonart, an authoritative voice in the field of architecture and international design worldwide, has designed from the Dior Café of the Design District in Miami, Silverspot Cinema, the penthouse by Brickell Flatiron, and other outstanding projects such as the U House, which was nominated for the American Architecture Awards, Villa M, a house located in Miami Beach, and many others, but this year it stands out for two in particular: The Casa B&B Italia (project winner of various awards such as the Interior Design Magazine Award), in this work the design intertwines materials with light and nature, and the second in the process of creation is the Collector Lounge space, which will be located in the famous Design Miami at Art Basel 2022.

Alexis Cogul works with materials taking advantage of light and space.

Cogul works with materials taking advantage of light and space. The young but experienced architect, who knew since he was a child that he wanted to design and build, considers that his professional duty is to “tell a story.”

He and his team are inspired by the constant sociopolitical evolution of habitats that lead him to consider architecture in a constantly changing context. Influences from contemporary lifestyles, new social trends, the arts, and ongoing environmental issues that drive interest in the intellectual design process are concepts that nurture him to come up with his innovations.

His interest and vocation arose through contact with one of his grandparents who was a cabinetmaker by profession, and with whom he had the opportunity to experiment with materials and furniture construction processes, which strengthened his passion for design.

In his youth he pursued his vocation formally, entering the School of Architecture of the International University of Catalonia. There he graduated with a high academic level, so much so that later in that house of studies he was a professor and also had the opportunity to work for prestigious Catalan architects, for this reason he acquired his knowledge from the Catalan school of architecture. Cogul also has a master’s degree in Urban Design from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Cogul has left a mark within international architecture since 2007. Four years later he settled in Miami, where he currently sits at a school. His influence spans several continents, including the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Remodeling, interior design, experimental projects; public and private places; open or closed spaces. This figure of architecture does not avoid challenges. “I read the projects and through the design process is where the project arises, it is what really makes school. In an inductive and curious task, creating ideas, spaces, buildings, objects and furniture, it is where our brilliance dazzles”, points out the businessman.

“I like to choose the projects we will work on very carefully and once we get down to work we seek to discover the mission that implies us because we have to adapt the architecture to the use that is going to be given to it”, he comments. “We are a curious study and our curiosity is what leads us to provocation, which is why I identify myself as a provocateur. If a project or design generates a reaction in people, it is because it fulfills its function, for this reason if our projects provoke that reaction, it means that the objective is being fulfilled”.

After collaborating with Oppenheim Architecture in Miami for several years, Cogul founded Doo Architecture, which has partnerships and alliances around the world. His mission is not only to build the future, but also to find investment and financing opportunities for projects that reflect his vision: an industry where the urban, social and economic use of a space are inseparable from its design and construction.

Three years later, after being named one of the 2013 Top 10 Designers by the Wolfsonian Museum (Miami Beach) Visionaries organization, Cogul felt there was a big disconnect between the construction industry and design. He started a new concept of architectural workshop or laboratory called Doo Corp, where design, construction and development are conceptualized together from the beginning of a project. This commitment to creating spaces that better fit their function and provide better guest experiences has proven effective for brands like the Ritz Carlton and Starwood Hotels.
