Spanish and Latin American cathedrals have joined forces to constitute the path of miscegenation in Spain, the US, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina and Chile, a project promoted by the cathedral chapter of Córdoba (southern Spain) and the Nauta Institute.
In a statement, they explained this Monday, June 13, that the objective of this Alliance of Cathedrals is to integrate the pilgrimage and the religious and cultural significance of the Camino de Santiago, in Spain, with the American routes.
The cathedrals of Santiago de Compostela, Córdoba and Málaga (in Spain), San Agustín de la Florida (USA), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), Quito, Ecuador)Cuzco (Peru), Córdoba (Argentina) and Santiago de Chile.
The name “mestizaje” is due to the fact that it merges the Spanish Mozarabic Trail with the Spanish Trail of America and the Inca Trail of the Andes, explains Francisco Guitard, president of the Nauta Institute, dedicated to promoting Hispanic-American relations.
The Camino del Mestizaje will connect “socially, spiritually and culturally to the cities and communities that make up the Alliance of Cathedrals”, all of them “intimately linked to the history of the Catholic Church in Spain and America”.
The route will unite the American trails from Santiago de Chile to Santiago de Compostela.
The Nauta Institute has commissioned the Spanish sculptor Juan Vega to create a cedar wood carving of the Apostle Santiago, inspired by his image in the Pórtico de la Gloria of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, a work that will be the symbol of the new Camino del Mestizaje.
Before being enthroned in the Cathedral of San Agustín de Florida, the sculpture of the apostle will be blessed by the Bishop of Córdoba on July 3; On July 10, in Santiago de Compostela, the new image of Santiago will be Commissioned by the deans of the cathedrals that make up the alliance.
The project plans to digitally connect pilgrims with the different routes and links of the Camino del Mestizaje. (YO)
