Geophysicist warns of ash cloud from Sangay volcano

Satellite images captured both last night and Tuesday morning warn of the presence of an ash cloud from the Sangay volcano, according to reports from the National Geophysical Institute.

From 07:30 this Tuesday through satellite images (GOES-16), an ash cloud can be seen that reaches a height of 2,000 meters above the crater and is heading west, which opens the possibility of slight fall of ash in the adjoining province of Chimborazo.

Last night, the monitoring of satellite images (GOES-16) allowed us to see an ash cloud that reached 1.4 km above the crater also in an easterly direction.

The Sangay volcano, located in the province of Morona Santiago in the Cordillera Real, is continuously monitored for its continuous activity since 2019 when it began its eruptive process.

Columns of ash from the volcano are common, and on other occasions have affected crops and the health of the inhabitants of provinces such as Chimborazo, Tungurahua, Los RĂos, Guayas and Santa Elena.

The Geophysical Institute maintains permanent observations on other volcanoes in Ecuador, such as Cotopaxi and El Reventador. (YO)
