80% of the retention centers and warehouses of the Police are collapsed with vehicles and evidence

The collection centers of the National Police are overwhelmed by the number of vehicles, tools and products retained. At the national level they have 176 heavy machinery, 9,475 vehicles, 39,637 motorcycles, 6 aircraft and 77 river boats. To this must be added all the evidence retained in the operations that is in the warehouses of the institution.

Eduardo Vásquez, head of the National Collection, Evidence and Evidence Unit, pointed out that 80% of these centers, which have retained vehicles and evidence, have already collapsed.

For this reason, from this Tuesday, October 11, they began the process for the scrapping of 302 cars, 3,071 motorcycles, 8 vehicle cabins and a block motor. These vehicles are located in different storage yards distributed nationwide.

From the Police they asked the owners of the vehicles to approach the Prosecutor’s Office to carry out all the pertinent procedures and prevent the number of vehicles held in the yards from continuing to increase.

A list with the plates, identification and brand of the vehicles considered obsolete and unusable is published so that the owners can identify theirs, they added from the Police.

The owners will have a period of fifteen days to carry out the procedure and that their property be withdrawn, the others will go to scrapping after that time is fulfilled.

Vásquez reported that they have 195 collection centers in the country, these are distributed to the Judicial Police and the National Anti-Narcotics Directorate.

However, not all of them are in institution properties, some are leased patios, which means an expense that the Police assumes monthly, although it did not specify how many centers or the amount spent each month.

‘More police officers are needed, but they must be equipped and under a management model,’ say specialists after attack on UPC in Guayaquil

“All the evidence entered into our collection centers is for crimes,” Vásquez emphasized. This would be the reason why there are so many vehicles and other evidence that rest in these places.

The scrapping, destruction, return of all the evidence and vehicles is carried out under the designation of the Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the Judicial Council, but the delay of several cases could keep the products in the warehouses and patios for years.

In addition, evidence continues to enter police yards. According to the Police, so far in 2022 they have 1,884 vehicles recovered, 2,458 apprehended, 1,984 motorcycles recovered and 2,904 apprehended. (YO)
