In the city of Akron (USA), the celebration of the main national holiday of the country – the Fourth of July (aka Independence Day) has been canceled. The reason is the death of a black driver, Jayland Walker, who died in a shootout with police officers.
According to The Washington Post, on Monday, June 27, police tried to stop the car of 25-year-old Walker for violating traffic rules. The driver fired at the security forces pursuing him, then jumped out of the car and tried to run away.
He managed to catch up in the parking lot. Then, according to the police report, “the suspect gave the police officers reason to believe that he was a mortal danger to them. As a result, the police shot the suspect.” More than 90 bullets were fired at Jayland Walker, more than 60 of them hit the target. He died on the spot.
Eight police officers involved in the arrest have been suspended pending investigation. A handgun was found in the suspect’s car. According to a lawyer hired by the Walker family, there is no evidence that this gun was used to shoot at the police.
Walker’s death sparked outrage among local residents – since December last year, this is the third person to be shot dead by police in Ohio.
