President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has declared a state of emergency in the territory of Karakalpakstan, where riots took place due to amendments to the Constitution. According to TASS, the regime will operate from July 3 to August 2.
According to the press secretary of the head of state Sherzod Asadov, the state of emergency was introduced “in order to ensure the safety of citizens, protect their rights and freedoms, restore law and order in the territory of the Republic of Karakalpakstan.”
Recall that after the riots, Mirziyoyev proposed to retain the clause on the sovereignty of Karakalpakstan in the Constitution. Meanwhile, rallies continued in Nukus on Saturday, according to the ORDA Telegram channel. In the area of the local market, the sounds of shooting and stun grenades are heard. There is no internet in the city.
A public figure in Uzbekistan, political adviser Aziza Umarova approved this decision, calling it “the only correct move in the current zugzwang.” She also expressed hope that no reprisals against the “courageous people of Karakalpakstan” would follow.
