Amnesty International Mexico asks companies to eradicate discrimination against the LGBT community

The organization Amnesty International (AI) Mexico requested this Saturday, within the framework of the march of the LGBT pridethat companies guarantee the labor rights of the community and end the discrimination inside the work spaces.

“It is very important that the private sector join the expressions of pride, the expressions, let’s say, festive Pride Day, but it is also important that they do their thing in terms of respect and guarantee of the labor rights of people from community”said Edith Olivares, executive director of AI Mexico.

According to the National Survey on Sexual and Gender Diversity 2021 (ENDISEG), in Mexico there are 5 million people aged 15 and over who recognize themselves as having a sexual orientation and/or LGBTI+ gender identity.

In addition, it refers that 28% of the people surveyed indicated that, in the last year, at work they received unequal treatment regarding benefits, job benefits or promotions; received offensive comments or ridicule, among others.

Against this background, the board of AI Mexico He pointed out that companies have the duty to guarantee labor rights and that there is no discrimination within the work spaces in the private market.

This year, one of the main criticisms that existed around the march was the presence of floats from companies that, according to Olivares, “They are not serving the needs of the community.”

That is why AI joined the march on foot to demand that it be carried out without trucks or platforms, since organizations and collectives denounced that last year the lack of protocols for the transit of said transports was notorious, which put into question risk the safety of attendees.

“The use of trucks and/or platforms draws attention to those who ride them, which is in contrast to the intention of this year’s march, which is to give visibility to people in the community who have traditionally been violated,” explained.

For this reason, Amnesty International highlighted the call of the organizing organizations to maintain the march outside companies and governments, “so as not to affect the sense of community and causes that have characterized the LGB pride marchyou”, he emphasized.

Finally, Olivares remarked that although this day is the celebration of LGBT Pride, people of sexual diversity must be respected. “24 hours a day in all corners of the country.”

He explained that several entities in the country still lack legislation focused on this community, in addition to saying, in which there are already laws that must be enforced “and that all people can exercise their rights, that in all states of the Republic respect for the dignity and life of people of sexual diversity is guaranteed,” concluded.
