For a decade, they have been quoting the actor’s own words that he is a rapist. The creators of the Netflix hit had to explain themselves

At the beginning of April, the series “Awantura” debuted on Netflix, which not only enjoys great popularity among viewers, but also gains more favorable opinions from critics. The production cast included David Choe, who made his screen debut in a larger role.

Prior to that, Choe was into street art and hosted the DVDASA podcast. In one of the episodes of the program in 2014, a member of the cast of “Brawls” boasted that he raped a masseuse. He described the act in detail, and also confessed that the thrill of being sent to prison for his misdeed was exciting to him. When podcast co-host Asa Akira asked him if he had just admitted to his listeners that he was turned on by rape. Choe nodded and joked that he was a “successful rapist.”

David Choe said on a podcast that he was a rapist. Now she’s starring in the Netflix series “Awantura”.

When the story went viral, Choe declared that it wasn’t true. The host of the podcast emphasized that he “extended his art” with improvisation. He emphasized that he is a storyteller, and his program has been filled with controversies, provocations and lack of good taste for a long time. He repeated many times that he is not a rapist, and that the podcast he runs is not informative and does not reflect reality. To seek reliable information about his life, Choe referred listeners to other sources.

In 2017, Choe addressed the matter again and published an apology. He admitted that he was sorry for every person he hurt with his words. He also revealed that he has been working intensively on his mental health for the past three years. After the premiere of the series “Awantura”, the topic returned, and fragments of the “DVDASA” podcast flooded social media again. This time, not only criticism of Choe returned, but also the creators of Netflix’s “Brawl”, who “hired a rapist for the series”.

The creators of “Awantura” issued a statement about David Choe

Those responsible for the first season of production – executive producers, series creator Lee Sung Jin and actors Steven Yeun and Ali Wong issued a joint statement on the matter, which the website cited.

“The story that David Choe fabricated nine years ago is unquestionably painful and extremely disturbing. We will in no way tolerate such behavior within our team and we understand why that statement still evokes such strong negative emotions to this day. However, we remember that David apologized in the past for making up this horrific story, and we also saw that he put in a lot of effort to get the mental health support he needed over the last decade to improve and learn from his mistakes.”

Although “Awantura” is called proof of the return of great quality series to Netflix, the platform may not decide to continue it. Like Onet, the viewership results of the production did not meet the website’s expectations, which submitted it to the Emmy awards in the category of a limited series – not a comedy. Around the premiere of the series, its creator Lee Sung Jin claimed that the entire story was written for the duration of three series, but this does not mean that we will actually see all of them on the screen.
