“Was Anne of Green Gables a lesbian?”. Scientists from the Jagiellonian University put a stick in an anthill

“Was Anne of Green Gables a lesbian? Receptions and interpretations of LM Montgomery’s novel” – this was the topic of the paper delivered on April 20 by prof. Piotr Oczko at the Jagiellonian University. As you can easily guess, it caused an avalanche of controversy.

“Leftism has gone mad. Completely” – or at least that’s what Dariusz Matecki from Solidarna Polska claims, referring to the controversial paper. It was delivered as part of a meeting of the Department of Theory of Literature of the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University and the Research Center for Children’s and Youth Literature. A few days before the event, it was known that it would not go unnoticed.

Controversial interpretations

The novel “Anne of Green Gables” by LM Montgomery has stolen the hearts of readers from around the world, including Poland. Successive generations have been reading it for years – hence the title of the paper by prof. Oczko has aroused much controversy.

In a tweet posted a few days ago, the Jagiellonian University states: “During the lecture, Prof. Piotr Oczko from the Department of Literary Theory of the Jagiellonian University will talk about the reception of LM Montgomery’s book in Poland and its numerous translations. In addition, the speaker will report on various contemporary interpretations of the novel in Canada (…). If the title [referatu – red.] will make readers reach for Montgomery’s novel again, which, according to the Speaker, has been achieved”. Thus, one can suspect that the question asked in the title of the work was only a form of so-called clickbait and something that was supposed to attract the recipient’s attention.

Stick in the anthill

It seems that the topic of Prof. Mesh especially moved the right. Dariusz Matecki from Solidarna Polska wrote on Twitter: “The left has gone crazy. Completely. Here at the Jagiellonian University, they are debating whether Ania from Zielona Góra was a lesbian.” In turn, Marcin Dobski, a journalist from the Salon24 portal, informed in social media: “Whether Ania from Zielona Wzgórza was a lesbian will be decided on April 20 by the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University.” In the comment, however, he added: “They should be examined.”

Most often people who are deeply moved by the title of the paper do not pay attention to its second part: “Receptions and interpretations of LM Montgomery’s novel”. It is extremely important in this case. As Prof. Piotr Oczko quoted by “”:

“I know that such a question was asked in Poland it’s like taking on the sacred. This book has shaped a model in our country. She had 17 translations, also into Kashubian. Was Anne a lesbian? Certainly not, but it is impossible not to notice that female-female relationships are depicted in Montgomery’s novel with much more passion and fervor than male-female relationships.
