Last Sunday, June 26, the bones of the Giant of Altzo, Michael Joakin Eleizegi Arteaga, were buried in the cemetery of the Guipuzcoan town, in a simple and intimate act.
Eight people, including volunteers from the Aranzadi Science Society, Altzotarra family and friends, lifted the remains that remained in a large, very heavy wooden box and buried them in the place reserved for the family, as explained by Aranzadi.
The last two years, since they were found on August 14, 2020, Eleizegi’s remains have been kept and preserved by the Aranzadi Science Society in its laboratories in Zorroaga.
The remains of the Giant of Altzo were discovered by a team of 15 people from Aranzadi, led by the anthropologist Paco Etxeberria, in the ossuary of the Altzo cemetery.
Migel Joakin Eleizegi Ateaga (1818-1861), better known since his time by the nickname of Gigante de Altzo, grew to be 2.40 m tall, and his experiences have left many stories and even the film “Handia”.
