The Environment Ministers of the European Union agreed this Tuesday on a common position to ban car sales Y new vans with a combustion engine in 2035 in the European Union, in line with what was proposed by the European Commission and backed by the European Parliament in the framework of the reform that they are going to negotiate of the climate package called “Objective 55”.
After a meeting in Luxembourg, the Ministers of the Environment of the Twenty-seven have established an intermediate objective of reducing CO2 emissions of 55% for passenger cars in 2030, in line with the proposal of the European Commission, and 50% for vans for the same date, lowering the initial expectations of the Community Executive of 55%.
The Council’s position, which must now be negotiated with the European Parliament to agree on a final legal text, highlights the importance of deploying charging infrastructure in the Member States to guarantee service to consumers.
In addition, the Council agreed to put an end to the mechanism of regulatory incentives for zero and low emission vehicles (ZLEV) from 2030, in line with what was proposed by the European Parliament.
In 2026, the Community Executive will proceed to evaluate the progress to achieve the emission reduction objectives and will establish if it is necessary to review these goals taking into account technological advances.
The European proposal was approved on June 8 in the European Parliament, in line with what was proposed by the Community Executive in July of last year, which established that “all new vehicles registered from 2035 will be zero emissions”.
After determining the position of the Twenty-seven, negotiations between Parliament and the Council will begin before a final rule is agreed.
