When the first e-books appeared on the Polish market, many experts predicted the end of the paper book. Meanwhile, she is doing well. Others, in turn, were betting that e-books and audiobooks would never gain as much popularity with us as they would in the West. They were also wrong. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle.
According to the preliminary report of the National Library of 2022: “reading books in digital formats (not necessarily specific to readers) in 2021 was declared by every twentieth reader. (…) The percentage of people listening to audiobooks is very similar (7 percent)”. Although the result does not seem impressive, it is worth noting that the value of the entire book market in Poland in 2020 was estimated at PLN 2 billion.
The sale of e-editions of press titles is also growing successively.
Publio started 10 years ago, on May 9 to be exact. Currently, we are one of the leading bookstores offering books in electronic formats – e-books and audiobooks, and additionally e-press. More precisely: over 40,000 e-books, over 9 thousand. audiobooks and over 300 press titles. So there is a lot to choose from.
E-books not only for the reader
While in the first years of Publio’s existence, the premieres of paper books and e-books did not go hand in hand, now such cases are rare. Especially when it comes to the best-selling writers and writers: Remigiusz Mróz, Olga Tokarczuk, Camilla Läckberg and Wojciech Chmielarz. Electronic formats (more and more often also audiobooks) go on sale on the same day as paper. Sometimes it happens that even a little earlier.
The advantage of e-books is also “endless runs”. We learned about it best on the day when Olga Tokarczuk was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. This was also evident in the series about The Witcher, whose sales were conquered by the Netflix series.
Although the popularity of books in digital formats has been growing for years, and the sight of someone with a reader on a tram has not been surprising for a long time, the pandemic has accelerated the process. Closed at home, readers have discovered the convenience of e-books and audiobooks. You didn’t have to go to the bookstore to buy them. Basically a moment passes from ordering to reading / listening to a book. Moreover, you don’t need to be an e-book reader as well. Many of the leading digital bookstores, including Publio, are also available as an app version, where you can order easily, then read eBooks or listen to audiobooks just as easily. In short, all you need to enjoy reading is a smartphone. Although it must be admitted that die-hard e-book readers praise readers with an e-ink screen for the fact that they do not tire the eyes, and provide the comfort of having a library in one device.
One of such readers, the flagship PocketBook model, can be won in the Publio birthday competition.
