The National Library will safeguard all video games developed in Spain

This week, the BOE collects the decree by which the National Library shall save at least one copy of every video game developed in Spain. The objective is to preserve that part of our cultural heritage that is getting bigger and bigger, with a turnover that is expected to exceed 1,600 million euros this year.

The claims of the video game sector

This Wednesday, the Spanish video game sector set out its main demands for the growth of the industry, among which a tax incentive for the production of video games and the obligation for large international distributors to reinvest 5% of turnover gross in the country.

This Wednesday the ‘White paper on Spanish video game development 2021‘, the eighth edition of the yearbook that reviews the situation of the industry in the country by the Spanish Video Game Development (DEV), and which has the support of ICEX Spain Export and Investment and Games from Spain.

The president of DEV, Valeria Castro, has collected the main claims of the Spanish video game sector, this time reduced to four, to encourage its economy. In this sense, he has pointed out the need to establish a tax incentive for the production of video games.

It is a measurelong in demand in the industry“, as stated in the White Paper, and which “has been supported by parliamentary groups on various legislative occasions”. With it, Castro has defended its potential to attract large international productions to Spain and improve the attractiveness of the industry against to private investors.

They also request the implementation of a Support Plan for the Spanish video game development industry, within the framework of the Plan to Promote the Audiovisual Sector (Spain Audiovisual Hub), which includes the creation of a network of incubators and accelerators managed by professionals of the industry, aid for developers, aid to support research, development and innovation, and a public-private investment fund.

With this second measure, the sector seeks to establish a path of support for video game companies throughout their life cycle.
