The Bilbao crime novelist José Javier Abasolo dies at the age of 65

The Bilbao lawyer and black novel writer José Javier Abasolo He has died at the age of 65, a victim of an illness, sources close to the writer have reported. Abasolo (Bilbao, January 3, 1957), studied Law at Deusto and has worked in the Basque Government, although he was already in early retirement.

His best-known novels are black genderespecially the four starring Mikel Goikoetxea, alias “Goiko”, a former Ertzaina turned private detective, published by the Erein publishing house.

Among his novels are “Far from that instant” (1997, Canarian Press Novel Prize 1996 and finalist for the Hammett Prize 1997); “A fictitious investigation” (2000), “Hollywood-Bilbao” (2004), “Before everything collapses” (2006, García Pavón Narrative Prize 2005) or “The anniversary of independence” (2006, Farolillo de Paper of the Guild of Booksellers of Bizkaia).

Forever set his novels in Euskadi and particularly in Bilbao, with curiosities such as “The Whitechapel Oath”, in which Sabino Arana investigated the identity of Jack the Ripper. Their last novel was “The wrong country”also in Erein, published last month.

After learning of his death, the literary world has expressed its sorrow on social networks, such as the Txertoa publishing house, which has described him as “the good godfather of crime novels written in Spanish in Euskal Herria”.
