KRRiT introduces new program designations in VoD services. What do the letters P, W, S and N stand for?

As we read on Press.pl, the regulation of the National Broadcasting Council on VoD platforms includes the four existing categories of programs. Content without age restrictions does not have an assigned symbol; programs for viewers aged 12+ will be marked with yellow (from 12 years of age) and orange (from 16 years of age) squares, respectively, while programs for adults – with a red and white key symbol.

The new solution will be the introduction of the symbols P, W, S and N. P stands for violence, W – profanity, S – sex, and N – drugs. The idea is to “inform the viewer about the types of content that may have a negative impact on the proper physical, mental or moral development of minors”. Broadcasters will have to ensure the visibility of the symbols “in such a way that the user can easily see the marking both when selecting programs and other broadcasts and during their duration”.

The governmental website of the National Broadcasting Council reminds that the Council systematically controls TV and radio programs in terms of compliance by broadcasters with the regulations protecting minors. Various types of monitoring are carried out, the subject of which is the observance by broadcasters of the two most important principles of legal protection of minors: protected time and the correct classification of programs to particular categories. The following are exempt from the labeling obligation: information services, advertising, teleshopping, sports broadcasts and text messages.
