Vegetables and fruit are usually covered with mold when they are not kept in the right place and in the right way. It also happens that their expiry date is just passing. Over time, bananas turn brown, carrots dry out, and potatoes sprout and wrinkle. Tomatoes are covered with mold and a lot of water comes out of them, which can be a bit disgusting for many people. Rather than flinching at the sight of it, it is better to find out how much use a moldy tomato can be. This is not a joke!

When do tomatoes get moldy? You can prevent your food from spoiling prematurely

Mold on products is usually the result of the growth and development of fungal colonies, mainly of the genus Aspergilius and Peniciium. The first cause of mold when storing vegetables and fruits at home is improper temperature. It is best to keep them in the refrigerator, where it is 4-8 ° C. When you buy vegetables like tomatoes try to give up the plastic bag – it is important not only because of the penetration of the foil into the ecosystem and the usual harm to nature, but also because vegetables stored in the foil deteriorate faster.

Can you cut off a moldy piece of fruit or vegetables and eat them?

It happens that the mold does not cover the entire part, but only a piece. Some people cut this fragment in order not to waste food. It all depends on the water in them. Along with mold, the amount of water in the products increases, which is easy to see on the example of, for example, cucumberswhich quickly becomes much softer. Therefore, removing the moldy part of the vegetables is only safe for hard vegetables such as eggplant.

Don’t throw away the moldy tomato! You can give him a second life

Take a spoiled tomato and cut it into slices, if this is not comfortable for you – you can wear gloves in advance. Then plant it on a soft cotton wool substrate, as you do with Easter cress. Leave in direct sunlight … and wait. In this way you can give birth to a new plant! When the plants start to sprout, put them into a larger pot or soil in your backyard. Remember that the temperature outside at night must be at least 15 degrees C.
