Gourman: Rua coffee shop

When I wanted to have an extraordinary coffee, out of the ordinary, I found two brands: Nanolot and Ruá, but they were only sold through digital media for home delivery. After the company that owns the first one opened its cafeteria and experiences store in La Piazza Samborondón, a few months ago, now it is Ruá that makes its appearance in Urdesa, in the same place where the Freckled Cookie was born in the 80s. , on Víctor Emilio Estrada street, a few meters from Plaza Triángulo.

Don’t get me wrong, there are good coffee shops in Guayaquil. Lúcuma, Sweet and Coffee, Coffee Box, Valdez, among others, are first class. Opening trail, they taught the country to drink good coffee.

However, in this case I am talking about a different coffee, of a higher category: the specialty coffee, which is the tip of the pyramid, the icing on the cake, the equivalent of the Ferrari or Bentley of cafes. These, those of specialty, with nearly 90 points and more, are what Ruá does. It’s like tasting a Grand Cru Classe wine.

Ruá holds tastings once a week, as well as four-hour courses over several days. Another thing that makes this cafeteria different is that they have two curiosities on the menu:

The first: you can order, per cup, a dozen notable specialty coffees from around the world; from Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Panama, Ecuador, Kenya, Colombia, etc., roasted by expert hands in Lyon, Guayaquil, Barcelona, New York and other cities

The second: they offer three experiences. 1) The same coffee with three different extraction methods: Express, V60 and AeroPress. 2) Three specialty batch coffees from the best of Ecuador, such as Abel Salinas, using the same extraction method. 3) The experience of a tasting of several of the coffees from different parts of the world mentioned above.

You can find prices per cup from $2 to $13, but you’ll taste some of the best coffee out there.

We tried a variety espresso geisha, awarded third place in the Golden Cup. Light, extracted with infusion in the V60 method, with incredible floral notes, enough to drink three cups in a row.

Then we tasted one of the cider variety, much stronger, washed and with double fermentation; a process that the Santa Gertrudis farm is undergoing, from the same batch of coffee that can be found today in Expresso Lab, in Dubai.

then another geisha in express, with such a body and creaminess that you could almost bite.

Lastly, Rwandan coffee of the variety bourbon red. Light, floral, with some hints of citrus; Very different from what we are used to. They have some desserts, cookies, sandwiches with good sourdough bread, to accompany the coffee. However, due to the quality of some of these, they should be tried alone, and then the companion. Ruá, house of great coffees. (EITHER)
