Parents declare that the children have a right to secrets. The study, however, reveals the truth

In the newest series of the platform “Keep calm”, which is a Polish adaptation of the novel, the main character Anna installs a spy application on her son’s phone. Why? “My heroine undoubtedly loves her child. However, she intuitively senses that her adolescent son makes risky decisions,” says actress Magdalena Boczarska, who plays the role of Anna Barczyk. “I believe that the behavior of the show’s heroine provokes more discussion than it gives ready-made solutions,” says Harlan Coben, who is one of the show’s producers.

Netflix conducted a study on Polish viewers

Netflix commissioned a study on safety, trust and privacy in the parent-teenage child relationship on the occasion of the premiere of the series “Keep Calm”. They were carried out by the Kantar research institute with the help of the CAWI survey carried out on the Kantar Club web panel.

Let us add that CAWI stands for Computer Assisted Web Interview. In practice, an interview is conducted using an online survey – it is currently one of the most popular methods of conducting research on the Polish market. 508 parents of adolescents aged 16-18 participated in the survey conducted in Poland.

Most respondents believe their children should have the right to their secrets, but still require them to let them know where they are and to always answer the phone. 36 percent survey participants explicitly admit that they want to control where teenagers are and what they are doing at a given moment.

47 percent responding parents would be willing to install a spyware application on their teenagers’ phones. They cite security as the main reason, which 42 percent. He indicates the respondents as an absolute priority among the values ​​important in bringing up children. Only 7 percent. it would categorically refuse.

37 percent parents who expressed their willingness to install a monitoring application for their child would agree that it should work both ways, i.e. it would give the parent access to the data on the child’s phone, and the child to the parent’s phone. Almost the same – 32 percent. – would refuse. 26 percent of respondents who refuse to install a two-way app say that not all information is appropriate for a child, and 22% believes that they would lose their sense of comfort and safety.

90 percent parents declare their willingness for their teenage child to share their problems with them. The solution is an honest conversation, of which 91 percent. of the respondents are aware of and believe that it is one of the most important educational methods. It is worth noting that 82 percent. of the surveyed parents also claim that they honestly talk to their children about important topics.

Michalina Kulczykowska, a psychologist from the Empowering Children Foundation, comments on the results of the study as follows:

Responses to the question asked are distributed practically evenly, which proves that the issue of children’s safety raises many dilemmas for parents. Even though parents of teenagers declare that they trust their children, they would still like to control them.

“Building and maintaining relationships between parents and teenagers is a great challenge. I know them very well, because I am a father of two adult daughters and two sons. There is no perfect recipe for upbringing. that they trust us, “emphasizes Harlan Coben. It should be emphasized that trust in their children and respect for their privacy are also reasons mentioned by parents who did not decide to install the monitoring application.
