The swelling of the face doesn’t just affect this area, but can also involve the neck or throat. If there are no facial injuries, the swelling may indicate another emergency. Find out about the most common causes.
What is facial puffiness?
caused by inflammation of the facial tissues. Also known as facial swelling, facial swelling is the result of an unnaturally large accumulation of fluid within the face that forms directly under the skin and within the tissues. Swelling of the face is most visible on the eyelids, cheeks and lips and usually disappears within a few hours, although in some cases it can spread to the neck and throat.
Swollen face – causes:
- Drug allergies. It may not be a side effect of the drug, but an allergic reaction in the body. It causes the face and other parts of the body to swell.
- A bite or sting. Tiny creatures such as bees, wasps and spiders can bite or sting, causing inflammation and irritation of the skin. It usually clears up after a few hours or days.
- Sun burns. Some people can burn their facial skin after just 15 minutes in direct sunlight. In addition to sore and itchy skin, severe sunburn can cause your face to swell and blister.
- Food alergy. If you are allergic to something you eat or drink, your body will react to it when it comes in contact with it. The skin of the face, especially around the mouth and eyes, and also on the tongue, can become inflamed within minutes.
- Angioedema. This is a situation where too much fluid collects under the skin.
- Sinusitis. It usually starts with the common cold. This makes it easier for the bacteria to infect the sinuses. The most obvious symptom is stuffy nose. Pain and swelling occur around the nose, cheeks, eyes and forehead and may increase with bending down.
- Preeclampsia. If you are pregnant and your face, hands or feet are suddenly swollen, it could be a sign of a serious condition.
- Contact dermatitis. The face becomes itchy, red and inflamed just after or after plants like poison ivy.
If the swelling worsens at an alarming rate, becomes more painful, or makes it difficult to perform simple activities, see your doctor immediately.
