Almost 35 members of the same family, three generations, a single stage. the famous musical Jesus Christ Superstar returns to the Quito stages with the representation of the Teran family. Its premiere will be this Thursday, March 31 at the renovated San Gabriel Theater, in the capital.
Joselyn Gallardo and Sebastian Acosta will show you the five ways to break a heart
Parents, children and grandchildren join this show directed by the producer and playwright Juan Carlos Teran. “I think that working as a family is without a doubt a challenge at a professional level… See how the family grows and maturesan experience that is unique, because there are very few of us who are lucky enough to get on stage with our dad, with our uncle, with our brother, with your cousin…”, bill Martin Teranwho will be in charge of personifying Jesus.
In addition, external actors will participate on stage, twelve dancers from Frevo Dance Studio directed by the choreographer Maria Jose Ortega, seven live musicians under the direction of Philip Teran, Martin Teran and Jennifer Byron Teran. Also the technical team of scenery, lighting, costumes, production and logistics.
The 90-minute, 18-scene musical retraces Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, before Judas’ betrayal that led to his arrest. This is how on stage what is narrated in the Bible is relived, the death sentence by crucifixion that Jesus receives from Pilate.
Martín is once again in the shoes of Jesus in the play, one of the most difficult performances he has done, he says. “This Jesus is a little less divine, although there is still this divine burden that you really have to die because that’s what you came here to do. Jesus also continues to be a magical, strange, mysterious and mystical character (…). Definitely, he is a character that in a part of the work gets into suffering and pain … and that is super hard ”, details.

While Judas will be personified by Pancho Terán. “I am that character who questions a lot throughout the play. He questions Jesus constantly, from minute one until the day of his death and after his death he continues to question Christ for having betrayed him… For Judas, Christ decided to be more of a pop stars that really a revolutionary man”, bill.

Although the story remains the same, its assembly has some renovations. “Before it was set in old Jerusalem, now the characters are much more contemporary, they changed their costumes, the scenery changed, before there were much more fabrics, now we have more screens,” Pancho Terán refers.
Jesus Christ Superstar it’s an opera rock from 1973 composed by Tim Rice and written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, has been staged worldwide. “It is very demanding for singers, very demanding for musicians (…), because you also have to sing and act. But it is a powerful work, it is beautiful”, they affirm.
The rest of the protagonists are Mía Terán, Felipe Terán and Mateo Terán.

Family and scene partners

For Martín Terán it is a special feeling to turn around and see that his scene partner is a member of his family. Personally, he misses his father a lot, Ricardo Teran (deceased in 2012), who personified Pontius Pilate ten years ago, when they had their first premiere at the Sucre Theater.
In this staging, in which some of the Terán are missing and others are added, they say they feel more professional in the process. “Work committees have been created that have been wonderful, which is a multidisciplinary committee, where there are people from the same family in music, in administration, in finance, in advertising, in communication. They are people who know about different aspects, who add these strengths to the project and make a wonderful work group”, Pancho Terán tells.
“We are at our best moment as a family, we are going to do something much more mature, more experienced and I think the public is going to like it a lot”add the interpreter Black.
They affirm that this show has been a reason for the reunion after the physical distancing left by the pandemic. “In some way, what this work has done is bring the family together (…), this has made us meet again, see each other again, communicate again as an integrated family, and this has been very pretty…”.
With a view to a Guinness record

With this musical, the Terán family runs for the Guinness World Records, in the Most Family Members category or The largest number of family members in a musical. “It is already validated by the Guinness Record in England, we meet all the conditions to do so”affirms Pancho Terán.
In total they will offer eight functions, until April 10, from Thursday to Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $50 (box), $40 (central seat) and $30 (side seat). They can be purchased at www.teatrosangabriel.com or at the theater box office. (I)
