Easter is one of the most important and oldest holidays in the Christian tradition. It commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The date for celebrating Easter is set for the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring. It makes this time a moveable holiday that may fall on March 22 at the earliest, and April 25 at the latest. This year, Easter falls exactly on April 17th.
How long will Easter 2022 last?
On Sunday, April 10, the Holy Week will begin, which precedes Easter Sunday. The celebration of Holy Week will look like this:
- April 10 – Palm Sunday, which begins Holy Week. The faithful bring palms and twigs to the church as a sign of reborn life.
- April 14 – Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus Christ.
- April 15 – Good Friday during which the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion is celebrated.
- April 16 – Holy Saturday, when the faithful bring sacrificed food in baskets to be eaten at Easter.
- April 17 – Easter, i.e. the beginning of the Easter Vigil and lighting the Paschal candle (a candle symbolizing the risen Christ.
