This year, the great cinematographer Janusz Kamiński is nominated for an Oscar for his work on Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. This is the seventh nomination in his career and a chance for a third win. The cameraman himself says that he does not need the third one, let the young people win Oscars now. Both young and full of energy, smile and wisdom, they are the creators of the short “Dresses”. Recently, the director and screenwriter Tadeusz Łysiak and the main actress – Anna Dzieduszycka went to the USA for pre-scar events.
“Dress”. An Oscar-winning chance for Poland
Nominated for an Oscar in the best short acting film category, because that is the name of this category, “Dress” is a drama whose protagonist is Julka. The description of the film reads: “Lust, sexuality and physicality. These are the deepest desires that the virgin Julia suppresses in herself while working in a roadside motel. It is so until a handsome truck driver becomes in her way, who soon becomes the subject of her fantasies.” And in the reviews? Lots of delight.
Tadeusz Łysiak, who made “The Dress” while still at the Warsaw Film School, is the son of the screenwriter Tomasz Łysiak and the grandson of the writer Waldemar Łysiak. This is only his second film, which – as he once stated – he made to pass the exam. And he is already nominated for an Oscar! It is worth remembering, however, that also the previous production of Łysiak, “Techno”, was noticed.
The director emphasizes that he did not want “Dress” to be a film about a short person, but that Julka could see every woman like in a mirror. Łysiak also said in one of the interviews that Dzieduszycka, who helped him write the script, is the perfect actress for this role. – I wanted Julka to be strong, direct – she was not afraid to show her middle finger if you offended her – that she would listen to death metal, be … an independent woman. And Anna is like that – said the young filmmaker.
