Peter Paul Rubens’ painting “Portrait of a Lady” on Thursday, March 17th, was put under the hammer of the “Old Art. 19th century, Modernism, Interwar” auction in “It was the most anticipated auction in the history of the Polish art market,” writes DESA Unicum in the press release.
Rubens’ painting is the most expensive piece of art sold on the Polish market
– Although this outstanding work was sold below the assumed estimate, the auction result – PLN 14.4 million – is record-breaking – said Monika Pietraszek, a representative of the Warsaw auction house, to the Polish Press Agency.
The auction house assumed that the canvas would reach PLN 14-24 million. Although this result is lower than the estimate, it still significantly exceeded the previous record, belonging to “Two Married Women” by Andrzej Wróblewski, the painting auctioned on November 30, 2021 for PLN 13.44 million.
– We have been working for a long time to get this painting to our auction. The sale of a work of this class and value at auction in this event of extraordinary importance, proving the growing role of our art market, which is catching up with mature Western markets. We are convinced that the Polish art market has great potential, and investing in masterpieces of painting or sculpture will continue to gain in importance, despite the currently difficult geopolitical situation – said Juliusz Windorbski, CEO of DESA SA

The path of PP Rubens’s “Portrait of a Lady” to the DESA Uncium auction house
The history of the “Lady’s Portrait” is documented from the moment she left the artist’s studio in Antwerp around 1626 to the present day. Over the centuries, it belonged to, among others, Sir Peter Lely, the British painter and friend of Rubens, to the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, to famous art dealers and collectors: Robert Roe, Wynne Ellis and Jules Porgès. From the mid-20th century to 2011, it was owned by the family of the Egyptian Prince Mohammed Ali Ibrahim and Princess Hanzade. The audience saw the work for the last time during an exhibition in 1965 in Brussels.

Interestingly, the work was described as a portrait of Rubens’ first wife, Isabella Brant. However, according to experts, the brooch depicted in the painting may indicate a relationship between the woman and the Jewish Duarte family from Antwerp.
