Everyone knows that Easter is a movable feast. But not everyone knows why this is so. The reason is a very old tradition. More precisely, it is the result of the agreement of the Council of Nicea in 325 AD.
The moving date of Easter – a historical outline
During the aforementioned Council of Nicea (AD 325) it was agreed that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring. Why then? It is simply a translation of the 14th Nisan date from the Hebrew (Lunar – Solar) calendar into the Julian (Solar) calendar. On the other hand, the date of Nisan 14 itself is the beginning of the Passover festival in the Hebrew calendar.
So when do Easter holidays fall in 2022?
According to the above rule, Easter may fall between March 22 and April 25. In 2022, we will celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord on April 17. However, for the years 2023 – 2026, the dates of this holiday will be as follows:
- Easter 2023 – April 16,
- Easter 2024 – March 31,
- Easter 2025 – April 20,
- Easter 2026 – April 5.
All of the above dates are set for the Catholic Church, while the faithful of the Orthodox Church celebrate Easter according to the Julian calendar.
Interestingly, the movable date of Easter affects other holidays and Easter traditions, e.g .:
- Ash Wednesday,
- Lent,
- Paschal Triduum,
- Ascension of the Lord,
- Pentecost (Pentecost).
Mathematical calculation of the date of Easter
When it is Easter in 2022 (and not only) it can be calculated mathematically. There are two methods – Gauss and Meeus / Jones / Butcher. The latter method does not require any digits for the specified time range, plus there are no exceptions. You can see both ways of calculating Easter dates here:
