Netflix will include 200 hours of subtitles and 20 dubbing into Basque this year

Netflix will promote the presence of Basque, in addition to Catalan and Galician in its catalog in 2022, with “the subtitling of a selection of international series and films, and the dubbing of several children’s and family titles.”

The American company has detailed that the audiovisual work that will be added throughout 2022 represents some 600 hours of subtitled international films and series, and some 60 hours of content for children and family audiences dubbed in the three languages (a total of some 200 hours of subtitles and about 20 hours of dubbing in each language).

“Is not sufficient”

EITB Media spoke with Alex Aginagalde, a member of the Pantailak Euskaraz platform, who explained that the step taken by Netflix “is not enough”. “They will really dub between ten or fifteen films, so the presence of these languages in their catalog could go from 0.05% to 0.5%, which is still very little.”

Aginagalde believes that both the new state audiovisual law and the activity of popular platforms have influenced Netflix’s decision.

Decision “very important”

Bingen Zupiria, spokesman for the Basque Government and Minister of Culture and Language Policy, for his part, described Netflix’s decision as “very important”.

In the press conference after the government council, Zupiria explained that the Basque Government has been “in permanent contact” with the audiovisual product platforms and, above all, with Netflix “on its own initiative and also because Netflix has shown interest and has contacted us.”
