Jane Campion Wins Bafta for Best Director for ‘The Power of the Dog’

the filmmaker Jane Campion won the Bafta for best direction this Sunday, thanks to her film the power of the dog, at the 75th British Film Academy Awards.

The New Zealand director became the third woman in history to win the award for best director, after Chloé Zhao, in 2021 for Nomadlandand Kathryn Bigelow, for The Hurt Lockerin 2010.

Campion beat Aleen Kham, who directed After Love, in this category; Ryusuke Hamaguchi, for Drive My Car: Audrey Diwan, for L’événement; Paul Thomas Anderson, for Licorice Pizza, and Julia Ducournau, for Titane.

Campion did not attend the gala and it was Benedict Cumberbatch, star of the film, who received the golden mask.

The Londoner read a speech written by the filmmaker: “Thank you for collecting this award for me, although in reality it is part of all of them because, as you well know, I received a lot of help from you, the actors in the film. Many thanks also to Netflix for all the support.”

With her, her filming partners Iain Canning, Tanya Seghatchian and Emile Sherman have been awarded, who posed with their masks in the press room of the Royal Albert Hall, in London.

The best foreign film has been Drive My Carby the Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi, while the best sound went to the team of Dune. This film has also won the award for best production design.

Joanna Scanlan won the Bafta for best leading actressfor her portrayal of Mary Hussain in the film After Love.

The British actress won her first Bafta beating Lady Gaga, a candidate for House of Gucci, Alana Haim by Licorice PizzaEmilia Jones by CODA, Renate Reinsve by The Worst Person in the World and Tessa Thompson for passing.

Will Smith was distinguished with the Bafta for best leading actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of sisters Venus and Serena Williams, in king richard.

Smith, who had been nominated for the first time at the British Film Academy Awards, adds this Bafta to the Golden Globe that he won a few weeks ago and takes advantage in the race for the Oscarfor which he is also nominated in the category of best leading actor.
