Heaven, here and now, on Merina Gris’s first album

The three musicians born in the 90s who form Gray Merino they are under pressure to enjoy themselves, on an overdose of dopamine and comfortable with their anonymity. Today they have released their first long album, “zerua pray”which contains eight songs that, although they do not start out with such pretensions, could become generational hymns.

In the lyrics, they point out the need to be connected, the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) or “fear of losing something, the dynamics of create-consume-dispose and the illusion of happiness behind the likeyes

In any case, the need to create a place in the midst of this maelstrom is also observed: “The worst thing is that we are all inside it, we speak the same language“, Explain the two male members and the female member of Merina Gris.

They say they started from consumption habits and self-criticism to find the formula that makes them stick their heads out of that fog.

Heaven, when?

The trio from San Sebastian published in 2020 “Besteek zer”, their first single. Since then, collaborations, video clips, seven other songs, great support from the public and the “no tickets” sign at her first concert have arrived.

Even if they are willing to question that immediate satisfaction and defend their proposal on stage, it can feel like heaven is at their fingertips. And they don’t want to do “anything” to stop the feeling of floating through the clouds.

“If we spend all the time looking at what we want to have, what is coming, what is gone and what we had, we lose the present”

They want to enjoy what is happening to them, but a point of fear appears: “It happens to us like when you go on vacation, what do you think: I have to enjoy this yes or yes”.

This has caused them “a little bit of anxiety”, because many times “we put pressure on ourselves with the need to enjoy ourselves”, explain the members of the group.

Merina Gris recalls that the sky “is always above”, despite the fact that we are a society that has “very internalized the lack of eternity of things”: “You always have the sky now. What’s more, that’s the only thing we have: if we spend all the time looking at what we want to have, what’s coming, what’s gone and what we had, we lose the present.”

In a decision that is hardly random, the album closes with the song “Antes no era ha feliz”, a song about nostalgia, a antinana: “Why do we think that in the past we were happier? There are many factors, of course, but one of them is that we had nothing to compare our reality with. If there is no past, there can be no comparison. And if there is no comparison, satisfaction is easier”.

For the three musicians, who are around thirty, becoming aware of the past has been “a kind of revelation”.

After publishing the album. the trio will launch themselves onto the stage with the unstoppable force of someone who identifies their limitations, reflects on them and accepts them. The first concert will be this Saturday at the Dabadaba hall in San Sebastian.
