It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the death of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winner, on March 13, 2022, a week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among his family, of natural causes

William Hurt was born in 1950, studied theology but entered acting in 1972 and enrolled at the Juilliard School. After many stage roles, he landed his first major film role in Ken Russell’s horror film “Altered States,” opposite Kathleen Turner. He gained publicity in the film “Body Heat”, becoming a star of the 1980s cinema. He also played a significant role in the comedy drama “The Great Cold” and the spy thriller “Gorky Park”, and then he was cast in the “Kiss of the Spider Woman” by director Héctor Babenco .

William Hurt. The 1990s brought further acting successes

In the 90s, successful roles seemed elusive for the actor. He then appeared in the films “The Couch in New York” by Chantal Akerman and “The Only Real Thing” directed by Carl Franklin.

In 2005, Hurt found success with the unusual role of crime boss Richie Cusack in David Cronenberg’s A Story of Violence, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. After three years, he made an even more unexpected entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in “Captain America: Civil War” and in “Avengers: Endgame”.

Hurt was married twice, to Mary Beth Hurt from 1971 to 1982 and Heidi Henderson from 1989 to 1992. He also had high-profile relationships with Matlin, Sandra Jennings, and Sandrine Bonnaire.
