JK Rowling is even more transphobic than she was. Criticizes the new regulations in Scotland

On Thursday, February 24, at 3 a.m. Polish time, Russian troops attacked Ukraine. The soldiers struck both from the ground and from the air. The Ukrainian army is resisting tough, but the situation is changing minute by minute.

oblivious to what researchers, social activists and her former readers have been trying to explain to her for nearly two years, she continues her transphobic crusade on social media. The writer is against changing the legal gender reassignment procedure in Scotland to an easier one, because in her opinion “sexual aggressors” will use these solutions to gain access to women’s toilets, where they will molest women.

JK Rowling attacks the trans community again

The Scottish government, led by Prime Minister Nicola Sturegon, plans to reform the law to facilitate the legal gender reassignment procedure. The new solutions assume that it will be easier to get a gender certificate.

It is postulated to abandon the mandatory diagnosis of gender dysphoria – formerly known as gender identity disorder. In other words, it is the suffering experienced by a transgender person caused by a mismatch between their gender identity and the gender assigned at birth. Under the new law, people from the trans community could independently indicate their gender in state documents.

Instead of a diagnosis, before obtaining a gender reassignment document, it will be necessary to document that the person lives for a minimum of three months in accordance with their true gender identity. After this time, it is necessary to wait another three months of “reflection” to make sure that the change is really what the person wants. Only then would an official certificate be awarded. The statutory age required to start the procedure is also to be changed: legislators want to go down from 18 to 16.

Outraged by this solution, Rowling tweeted: “Many women’s groups have provided Nicola Sturegeon’s government with well-documented evidence of the very likely negative ramifications of the new law on women and girls, especially those most vulnerable to harm. what was warned about, the prime minister will not be able to pretend that she did not know anything. “

Rowling also shared a tweet of the Melbourne sociologist Angie Jones, where similar laws already apply. This one describes that in her town, “Self-identifying men report to rehabilitation centers for victims of sexual violence. If they are not admitted, they send the case to a human rights tribunal. Women are self-exclusion. Groups implode. There are no more centers for the most vulnerable women.” , which the satisfied writer commented in the words:

This is exactly what I am talking about. If the law Nicola Sturgeon wants to pass goes into effect in Scotland, the most vulnerable women in the community will be hurt: those who seek help after being raped by men and those in detention centers. Statistics show that women in prisons were likely to have been harassed prior to incarceration.

Nicola Sturgeon, in turn, was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 in which she said:

JK Rowling is free to express his views, as much as I can and do all of us. But that is not what the debate is about. The law was submitted to parliament last week and will undergo standard, very thorough, legislative procedures. It is about an already existing process by which people can legally change their gender. We want it to be less traumatic and less inhumane for transgender people, who are one of the most stigmatized groups in our society.

“These provisions will not give trans people more rights than they have now. They will not take away the rights of women under the Equality Act” – she emphasized

JKRowling’s transphobia

Let us remind you that this is not the first time that JKRowling expresses his transphobic views. The public learned about this when in 2020 the writer posted a link to an article on the web about supporting “people who menstruate” during the pandemic. The inclusive headline ironically commented, suggesting that these people are only women.

Readers began to point out to her that this opinion was unfair to transgender and non-binary people who, despite having female reproductive organs, do not identify as women at all. The writer countered the criticism, arguing, inter alia, “By saying that gender does not exist, we invalidate the experiences and reality of women around the world. I know and love transgender people, but to deny the existence of the concept of gender detracts from the description of their lives. Telling the truth is not hate,” she wrote on Twitter.

To defend herself against criticism, she later wrote a lengthy essay in which she tried to explain what she meant. “Tales of young trans men [to osoby, którym narodzinach przypisano płeć żeńską – przyp. red.] show that this is a group of particularly sensitive and intelligent people. The more I read their descriptions of gender dysphoria full of in-depth descriptions of anxiety, anxiety, dissociation, eating disorders, self-healing and hate, the more I wonder if, if I were born 30 years later, I could try transition too [proces mający na celu pełne dopasowanie ekspresji płciowej do tożsamości płciowej – przyp. red.]”- she wrote, which was counterproductive. Because, as she continued to convince:” I want to emphasize it very clearly: I know that transition is a solution for a certain group of people with gender dysphoria, but on the basis of extensive research I also know that there are studies , which show that from 60 to 90 percent. adolescents with dysphoria grow out of this state “- it’s like she poured gasoline into a fire.

It turns out that Rowling did not read the research she cited very thoroughly or simply did not understand it. Child psychiatrist Scott Leibovitz of the Ohio Medical University explained that the research project she was so keen to refer to was about pre-pubertal children who were not necessarily dysphoric, but rather “girly boys” or “boy girls”.

In his opinion, the claims that Rowling made in her text could be very harmful to the family seeking acceptance of young trans people. Parents may decide that their children’s troubles are only “such a phase” and if a famous person says so, the child will probably “grow out of it” – says the doctor.

The writer has since been referred to as “TERF”. TERF is an English abbreviation for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist / feminism” which in Polish translates as “trans-excluding / a radical / a feminizm / feministka”. The abbreviation was created back in 2008 to describe a minority of women calling themselves feminists, and in fact professing transphobic views and claims. One such postulate is that transgender women are not women and therefore should be excluded from the space for women, TERF could also mean opposition to legislative initiatives for the rights of transgender people.

Over the years, the term has become much broader and now refers to a group of people who exclude the trans community. Most often, people who are referred to as TERF consider this term offensive, they sometimes use the phrase “gender critical” interchangeably.
