Javier Viar, former director of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, dies

Javier Viar, director of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum between 2002 and 2017, died this Thursday at the age of 75, as reported by the Bilbao exhibition center.

Viar was director of the aforementioned museum until March 2017. On that date Miguel Zugaza returned to the Fine Arts, who for several years had directed the Prado Museum in Madrid. Like Zugaza, Viar opted for the expansion of the Bilbao museum, an expansion that will be carried out by the British architect Norman Foster.

Before directing the Bilbao museum, Viar was the curator of several exhibitions, such as those dedicated to Balerdi, Eduardo Chillida or Vicente Ameztoy.

In addition, during his period as director of the center, the museum acquired important works such as Lucrecia by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Trembling Irons II by Eduardo Chillida or Pumpkins by Miquel Barceló.
