the universe of TikTok it is as entertaining as it is constructive. Its short video format not only makes us laugh in a few minutes, but also allows us to learn in animated tutorials quickly, easily and above all, fun.
The combination of these three desired ingredients conquered the followers of the Mexican barbecue fan Robert Morales18 years old and better known on social media as Robe Grill. That formula also crowned him as the Fav of the Flavor (favorite kitchen tiktoker) in the first edition of the awards TikTok Awardsorganized by the same platform, where the teenager has almost 10 million followers.
His ritual “spanking” meat (a smack that he gives before marinating it) and his characteristic “what a scream!”, which he sings when the grill caresses the meat in recipes that can be mastered in two minutes or less, can be seen appreciate on TikTok, Instagram and Youtube (@robegrill). And today those rites were enjoyed live and direct when Robe was celebrating a master class in Guayaquil addressed to “snackeros” selected by Pepsi, in a contest on social networks to be able to chat with the famous chef.
The essence of this master class was to mix Roberto’s knowledge with the traditional flavors of Ecuador, advanced by the digital celebrity with this Diary one day before the event. “We will make a sweet plantain with cheese and matambre, I am going to give it my touch and each person will also give it their own. That’s what it’s all about, there are no rules, we’re going to flow, ”said Robe, who also revealed that he was very excited to try the sweet plantain with costeño cheese. The cook shared other incidents from his career in the interview below.
Spending more time at home due to the pandemic, many shared on social media the creativity that blossomed in their kitchens. Was it your case?
Of course, the pandemic helped to spend more time in the kitchen, to be more creative, to look for more ideas and to experiment and make mistakes to learn. The idea of going out on the networks was born at this time, but since I was a child I cooked, because I liked the grill and being around it.
What do you think makes you stand out from other accounts doing the same or similar content as yours?
I believe that in the end what stands out in each person is being oneself, not pretending to be others. Do what you like and are passionate about, but above all, be daring. Dare to be original and not lose it.
It is known that your passion for the grill arose when you accompanied the roasts that your father prepared precisely when you were a child…
As I have told several times, I am from Sonora, where my father grew up and lived; that’s where he brings this tradition of roast meat and family life around the grill. We are not chefs, but we are very passionate about the grill and cooking.
What is your favorite cut of meat?
A very good cut is the New York steak (veal tenderloin), is the one I like the most; and then there is the ribeye (rib eye steak). They are very top and premium cuts.
And do you also like to eat vegetables?
Yes, of course (laughs). If you are creative in the grill, very rich dishes with vegetables come out. For example, there is one of a roasted cauliflower and it has a ponzu sauce with garlic, herbs and a chili dressing that is very good. Of the vegetables, that’s my favorite dish.
What do you need to cook or put on the grill that you haven’t done yet?
Very good question! The kitchen is, I don’t know if it’s infinite, but very big… Obviously I still have a lot of things to do and create on the grill. And that’s the hardest part, coming up with new recipes every day, every time you make a video. I’m going to give myself the task of thinking of more creative preparations.
What do you like the most near a barbecue?
It is coexistence. It is an opportunity to be with family and friends, a coexistence is generated that is very cool. Also that everyone gets into the grill to help, to do their part by doing something of their own. It’s the nicest thing about being near a grill.
How often do you get together with your family and friends to eat on the grill?
I cook almost every day, but in meetings we see each other every weekend or spending a weekend. It depends a lot on the occasion too.
Apart from finishing your studies in Business, what other projects do you have in the short term?
Within the Robe Grill project we have many initiatives in mind, which are being built little by little. They are not easy, but they are very exciting. One of those is my line of knives; We also want to develop a meat brand.
Roberto is currently studying Business, making these two passions coexist in his life. At the moment he also has a line of merchandise with his name, which has t-shirts and hoodies (like the ones he wears in his videos), as well as hats and caps, all with the design of the expression of the: what a screech!
