Works of art and documents that cover the trajectory of more than seven decades of the plastic artist Olga Duenas (1926) will be exhibited at the National Museum of Ecuador (MuNa)in Quito.
“We are going to present an exhibition of Olga Dueñas. She is an artist born in the United States, a pioneer of kinetic art… she was related to abstract art from the United States, and when she arrived in Ecuador her artistic horizon also broadened. She arrives in Ecuador after a friendship with Aracely Gilbert… (Dueñas) she meets her husband and stays here, she stays in Latin America traveling… (Furthermore) she becomes a reference in abstract creative production and then kinetics”, says Romina Muñoz, executive director of MuNa.

“What we are going to see is a retrospective, an exhibition that will bring together the different facets of his work. This exhibition project has been organized by Mónica Espinel de Reich, who is a renowned curator and researcher from Guayaquil”, she adds.
Dueñas’ granddaughter, Adriana Dueñas, participated in gathering information for the exhibition, according to Muñoz, who added that the family has taken pleasure in this type of activity, in which the work of the plastic artist is recognized. “(Olga) expressed her gratitude for valuing her work and for being in these two cities (Guayaquil and Quito) that were very important for her creative production, because although she lived for many years, she also had several exhibitions here (in Quito). ), at the Casa de la Cultura, at La Galería… For her it was very important that her work be shown here”, she indicates.
This exhibition has already been in Guayaquil: it was inaugurated in October 2021 at the Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum. “(Now) it was moved to Quito precisely to commemorate International Women’s Day, and it is also part of the strategies to strengthen the Network of Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage,” says Muñoz.
“It is part of our principles and work that the museum is somehow trying to guide to precisely highlight trajectories that have been relegated by time. That is an interest that we have as a museum. As a national museum, it is a historical debt that there is also with the figure of many women”, she says.
The opening of the exhibition is scheduled for March 8, at 7:00 p.m. According to the executive director, the next day, March 9, there will be a guided tour at 11:00 with the curator of the exhibition. “They will be able to listen to her, who is the one who has raised all this important work,” she says.
