What is narcolepsy? The disease that the singer Camilo suffers and that is incurable

Imagine falling asleep while you are eating, during a conversation with your friends or in a work meeting, it would be something super uncomfortable. However, there are people who suffer from this pathology, including the famous Colombian singer Camilo Echeverry. This was revealed by his wife Evaluna Montaner during an interview with Colombian media.

“Camilo falls asleep very quickly and is narcoleptic. So he can’t attend a lot of meetings with friends and that’s because he falls asleep, ”Montaner said in the interview. Likewise, Evaluna maintains that they are learning to live with this situation, since in recent months it has been very recurrent.

What is narcolepsy?

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders of the United States, people with this disease feel rested when they wake up, but as the day progresses they experience sleepiness that affects their performance.

In a work published by el Tiempo, specialists from this Institute explained that this disease occurs in both men and women and can occur from childhood. The specialists indicated that during the treatment the hours to sleep should be regularized, avoiding coffee, alcohol and cigarettes.

Similarly, they reported that narcolepsy can have several causes, among which are autoimmune disorders, family history or some neurological or nervous system injuries.

Depending on its severity, it may be accompanied by muscle weakness or hallucinations, in addition to other alterations derived from poor sleep.

Narcolepsy is incurable

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders explains that there is no cure for narcolepsy. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a central nervous system stimulant to treat excessive daytime sleepiness.

Medication therapy must be accompanied by behavioral strategies. For example, taking short, scheduled naps at times when you tend to feel sleepiest, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, winding down before bed, and avoiding large meals, alcohol, and caffeinated beverages before bed. (I)
