La Carita de Dios will see the birth of a new space that promises to welcome new and established national and international artists. The San Gabriel Theater will be baptized (inaugurated) next March 2 in the historic center of Quito (in Avenida América and Rumipamba), under the direction of the musician and producer Christian Valencia.
“It is a space that benefits the arts, the city and the country. Because opening a private space, that does not have any type of commitment and that its only commitment is art, is always positive”expresses Valencia.
Valencia affirms that the idea of the theater arose almost two years ago in order to cover some needs that were lacking in other theaters in the capital. “Here in Quito the issue of theaters is very complicated, because those that exist do not have parking, they do not have the necessary technical needs,” it says.
This is how he took the proposal to the San Gabriel school, which began to manage it privately. “This possibility appeared, I approached the people from the school, the proposal was made and there was a lot of debate about this proposal”, Valencia account.
The theater was adapted a building that was originally built in 1952 to be a cinema that worked until the 90s. Its adaptation or remodeling to a theater took eight months, conserving -yes- its initial inspiration and structure. “We have put all our hearts and all our knowledge into it. He is very well prepared in terms of structure, the decoration is very beautiful, it is a trend art decowe try to respect that”, maintains Valencia.

The theater will have a closed parking for 300 cars (Your entrance will be through América and Mariana de Jesús avenues). Its main room has a total capacity of 762 seats and a stage with a mouth of 14 meters, which includes a removable pit. In total there are four environments that the Teatro San Gabriel offers: lobby, foyer, seats and VIP box; all with the purpose of providing a complete experience so that it becomes a meeting space from start to finish.

“We have put a lot of head into the attention of the public so that they see a nice show, but we also have a very nice cafeteria in the lobby, that allows people to share and close this experience with an unforgettable night”affirms who confesses to being in love with this project.

The theater seeks to offer a wide cultural and artistic offer, where different artistic disciplines can be accommodated. However, Valencia, who defines himself as a person who has always taken risks with original projects, will bet mainly on his own creation. “The theater is going to have a particular openness towards original things, towards projects of Ecuadorian creation and production. What I want is to allow other artists to generate, to create, to write, to propose, and to be somewhat risky in that sense”it says.
A proposal that goes hand in hand with workshops to prepare young talents. “We are going to go on stage, if all goes well, to a large number of new Ecuadorian artists in the coming months”declares.
He mentions that they also want to offer a segment of children’s space for every weekend. And in the future host international artists.
He points out that they already have a billboard planned until December, with an activity directed from Tuesday to Sunday. In his web page www.teatrosangabriel.com Some of the shows scheduled for March and April can now be reviewed. Tickets can be purchased on this same site -with numbered seats- for each of the shows.
Sergio Sacoto will be the first musician to open the billboard with a concert for this Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5, at 8:30 p.m. Tickets for the central seat location cost $30, side seat $25, VIP box $40. While the ticket to access the broadcast by streaming it’s $10.
Among the other shows that occupy its billboard are the children’s musical Royal Princess, the Papa Changó concert, the musical theater Jesus Christ Superstar, the monologue Old me or you millennials? With the performance of Monse Astudillo; the play lost, with the actors Ave Jaramillo and Álex Cisneros.
From artists for artists

Valencia is a musician, composer, writer, director and producer. To Ecuadorian and American stages he has brought some well-known musical works such as Entanglements, the musical; July, the musical; old fashioned lover, among other. He has also worked composing some incidental music pieces for movies and series like Dexter, Cry Macho, Star 14, among other.
All this accumulation of knowledge and experiences from which Valencia has been nourished, somehow lead him to assume the direction of a theater with an artistic look and sense. “I arrive at the San Gabriel Theater after eight years of theatrical activity, after 25 years of musical activity… so I already arrive with the experiences that allow me to solve those problems. Indeed, it is a theater made from an artistic point of view, that is, from the artists for the artists”it states.
Characters who stay behind the scenes
He considers himself a person who understands the needs of the public and the artist. “The treatment that I would have liked to receive, or that I received at some point, I would love for the artists who visit the room to also receive, and that the public can feel; It’s like a communion…”he maintains.
