He is 45 years old and has spent 25 of them working in the media (magazines, radio, television) and theater production. Pedro Ortiz Jr. or Pedrito, as the public knows him, has decided to change his lifestyle and improve his health. The decision was made after a visit to the doctor and discovering, after several tests, that he had an arterial blockage. The message was clear, change was necessary.
His diet has improved, he has included exercises in his routine, so much so that while he was talking to this newspaper he was doing weights at home before going to the radio and fulfilling his schedule. More sure of himself, and happier for what he is achieving, both in his personal and professional life, Pedrito tells us how this weight loss process has been and the new challenges he wants to meet after achieving his first goal: to reach the size L.
You have a new image and share your progress on networks, what motivated you to change your lifestyle and what diets are you following?
What motivated my change was precisely a health problem, I had a clogged heart artery and my doctor told me that I had to lose weight quickly, I had to stop being sedentary, and we began this process together. My doctor’s name is Lenin Quintero, he is a great doctor, and we began this process together of eating well and implementing physical activity in my life and after six months I have lost more than 100 pounds and my artery is no longer clogged. But what motivated me to change the lifestyle to one where I currently include exercise and a high-protein diet, a game between the keto diet and the paleo diet, has been health. All this always monitored by my doctor.
I am also experiencing intermittent fasting, all directed by the doctor, this is not me making it up, he is my guide. With him we have been implementing between diet and exercise, and fasting for 16, 20 or 24 hours are the ones I practice the most. At some point I did the 48 hour challenge. This does not mean that I recommend what I do, each one has to go to their doctor and each doctor, if it is the case, refer them to a specialist. The first step is to go to a doctor and recognize that you have a problem because being obese is a problem that leads to other internal difficulties. I was having, without knowing it because I didn’t have the symptoms, beyond fatigue, knee or spine pain, with diet and exercise, and at my age I have been able to combat a problem such as a clogged artery or a heart attack.
Virginia Limongi, new presenter of ‘In contact’: I want people to know me and remove the label of miss
As I am a public person, in the progress that I show (on social networks) I always indicate that they go to their doctors.
I am going to get certified in nutrition, because this is a process, I am a communicator and it is important to communicate responsibly. According to me, I am halfway to my goals. My goal is to reach the size largeI was in 4X, now I’m in 2X and I already have some XL clothes left, I want to become largethat is my limit and at the same time toning, and I am aware that at some point I am going to require surgery on the remaining skin.
Did you ever think about a bariatric operation?
Yes, I was on the list and approved to have a gastric sleeve or bariatric operation when the obesity clinic existed at the IESS, there first they send you to lose 10% of your weight, because in the operation you drastically stop eating food and the amount you ate, they train you a little bit mentally. Obesity is also in the head, it is very difficult for a person when he stops eating, his head is still fat, his head is still addicted to food.
In that process I entered, I complied, I have always been disciplined when I propose things, but then it scared me because I remember that a couple of people died, who had undergone bariatric surgery and I remember that the doctor himself told me the risks of the operation, and that scared me and I gave up.
Are you studying nutrition or planning to do so?
I want to do it, I still don’t know where or how.
What other achievements have you discovered with this weight loss?
Psychologically I feel like a winner, I am much quicker to make decisions, I think I feel capable of demanding the things I want and how I want. On the other hand, I feel less crushed by the world and its problems, zero depression, zero sadness. I have discovered that exercise is a turbo of endorphins, dopamines and serotonins and all of that makes you stay positive, if not, at least the things that seemed very serious to you before, you handle it very well, you tolerate it. I think I am being more attractive to brands, I am closing deals with new brands linked to health, for example, I am the representative and image of a pharmacy on-line, I think it is something superpositive. And do you know what the story is? The anecdote is that I changed lines, because I was selling sandwiches, and now it’s not that I’m selling health, but people see me and I’m becoming a health benchmark.
For this reason, faced with this responsibility, I feel that I must prepare myself and study nutrition, certify myself in nutrition in order to be able to advise a person with all of the law at the time. The same is step by step, what is happening and is part of the success, you only have to account to yourself no matter how public person you are or that there are people who tell you to stay fat because you are going to lose your spark, your humor or your fans. You don’t have to give in to those pressures, mentally it’s complicated.
I have discovered a vitality to play with my children in the park, it is an incredible thing, it is like an awakening and I am very proud to achieve it without having to undergo surgery that would have put my life at risk like all surgery. I greatly respect people who have gastric sleeve surgery because that operation also saves lives and cures many things, but there are other ways of doing it and this is what I am doing, the most difficult.
At the end of this road, imagine that I end up not only slim but with a muscular physique and giving nutrition talks, maybe it will take me there. You have to dedicate two to three hours a day to all this, to exercise, to plan meals, fasting, it is already integrated into your life.
Do you feel more vital?
I feel like I’m 20 years old, that vital, obviously I’m not an athletic person, but definitely when I go out to play ball with my son, for example, I do something that I haven’t done in the ten years that he has, you understand me, even physically we demand the same, and I run and everything.
When I go out and jog, I jog slowly, I always try to have the guidance of friends who do it professionally, I respect those who do it a lot, I’m just doing it.
I jog a little, on YouTube I found something called The Body Project, it has calisthenics and low-impact cardio exercises, ten minutes to an hour long; friends who are in the gym have given me certain routines, and I do weights at home. And I see some photos that you can already see my biceps and I see that the weights have worked at home.
Are you no longer selling your line delivery of sandwiches?
I closed the sandwiches provisionally, I am looking for a way to do it differently, in view of the fact that the pandemic is completely over and the delivery low and what you have to have is a local. I am looking for the relaunch of the place and with new ideas because I could launch myself with a keto line, for example, within the world of food. (I)
