Dmitrij G³uchowski on subway bunkers in Kiev and Kharkiv: I never thought that it could become a reality

On Thursday, February 24, at 3 p.m. Polish time, Russian troops attacked Ukraine. Vladimir Putin’s troops struck from various directions, both from the ground and from the air. In the morning of February 25, the Russians began bombing the capital of Ukraine. The situation changes minute by minute, we have a special relationship.

Metro 2033, Głuchowski’s best-known book, tells the stories of people who survived the nuclear war and live in the Moscow metro 20 years after it ended. The writer also initiated the project Universe of Metro 2033, within which novels and short stories are written. Their action also takes place many years after the outbreak of World War II; Most of the characters from these positions are also hiding from nuclear explosions in subway bases around the globe. That is why Głuchowski emphasizes how tragic it is that his visions, in a way, come true before our eyes.

Dmitrij Głuchowski: I am ashamed. Forgive us, Ukraine

After the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army began, Dmitry Głuchowski wrote:

This is a predatory, fratricidal war, unleashed by a mad tyrant, for which there is no justification. I am ashamed. Forgive us, Ukraine.

We demand an immediate end to the bombing of Ukrainian cities and the withdrawal of the occupation forces from Ukraine. #NoWar

Głuchowski is also a journalist of “Nowa Gazeta” – he wrote an article for her, translated by Agnieszka Sowińska and published on Friday at Wyborcza.pl. “With my generation, live, things are happening that, as it would seem, should never have happened; we gain a surprising experience, the possibility of understanding why grandparents and great-grandparents were silent, when whole nations devoured depths of madness, when societies indulged tyrants ( ..) “-.

In 2017, on the occasion of the premiere of the novel “Tekst”, Głuchowski confessed in an interview with Gazeta.pl that he was afraid to write about threads related to the Russian mafia. – In the last chapters I write about criminals connected with the death of Boris Nemtsov and other politicians. And I describe exactly where they are. So if anyone in Russia is going to be dangerous, it’s them. I had a dilemma, I was wondering if I really should describe it. But I thought: It’s just a book, I’ll put it on paper. And the fact that the police are corrupt and everyone knows so, I have not discovered any frightening truth is simply reality – emphasized the writer.

The Russian war against Ukraine continues. There is information about houses destroyed, wounded and killed. Needs are increasing hour by hour. That is why Gazeta.pl joins forces with the Polish Center for International Aid (PCPM) Foundation to support humanitarian aid for Ukrainians and Ukrainians.
