Abramovic was born in 1946 in Belgrade. Today, it is the capital of Serbia, but previously torn by the military activities of Yugoslavia for years.

In 1975, she got involved with the German-born artist Ulay. It was with him that she created many of her most famous works. Together, they dealt with performance art, focusing on the subject of ciaa, practicing body art. Their paths diverged in 1988 – here they also joined life and art.

In fact, this performance was supposed to end with a marriage vow. As part of “The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk”, Abramovic and Ulay wanted to cross the entire Great Wall of China, each starting from a different side, and get married after the meeting. However, when they arrived at the meeting place, after three months of wandering, they parted.

22 years later, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Marina Abramović intended for 700 hours to let strangers look her in the eye. Ulay also stands in a long line, but she didn’t know it. The assumption was: she closes her eyes and opens them only when the next person is already sitting in front of her, and then they calmly, without a word, look at each other.
