– I haven’t examined my ears for a long time, I actually know what the doctors would say – Dave Grohl in an interview with Howard Stern.
Dave Grohl: If you were sitting next to me at dinner, I’d have trouble understanding you all this time
The multi-instrumentalist and vocalist of Foo Fighters added that he has trouble understanding the words spoken by people sitting next to him. From the beginning of the pandemic, he has even more difficulty talking:
If you were sitting next to me at dinner, I would have a hard time understanding you all this time. It’s even worse in crowded restaurants, and the worst shit pandemic is because people wear masks. I’ve been lip-reader for 20 years … I’m a rock musician. I’m practically deaf. I can’t hear what you say to me.
Grohl admitted that he did not wear headphones on stage because he wanted to feel the “natural atmosphere” of the concert. Also, no earplugs are used.
How does it manage, for example, with the recording of new songs? He claims he can still hear well enough to pick up specific details in the band’s recordings. – When we go in to record an album and mix the album, I hear the smallest details – Grohl. – My ears are still tuned to certain frequencies, I can hear if something does not tune or sounds wrong cymbal. When mixing, I can hear everything we’ve done with this song, he adds.
Dave Grohl is a former drummer for the band Nirvana (1990-94), as well as the founder, vocalist and guitarist of the Foo Fighters group. In 2007 he was ranked 6th on the list of the 50 best rock drummers according to “Stylus Magazine”.
