at the very beginning, he emphasizes that he issued the statement “in response to numerous false information appearing in the public space” about why he should be dismissed from the position of director of the Słowacki Theater in Krakow. In numerous interviews, he emphasizes that the troubles began after the December premiere of the staging of Dziady directed by Maja Kleczewska, criticized by the curator of education, Barbara Nowak (later also by Minister Gliński and Czarnek, who had not even watched the play). Officials argue that it is due to violations of the law on public procurement.
The Marshal’s Office lists the reasons for dismissing Głuchowski
The litany of reasons for dismissal begins with the fact that he did not conduct an open tender for “comprehensive cleaning services in the theater” and concluded separate contracts with a contractor of his choice – this is the first violation of the law. Officials argue that since he entered an estimated PLN 800,000 for the execution of this contract, he must have known that a tender was necessary. They also emphasize that these irregularities were discovered during the audit, which began in September 2021 and ended a month later – the premiere of “Dziady” took place a few months later. In writing, the director of the show is “Maria Kleczewska”. The artist’s real name is Maja.

Głuchowski was also said to have “violated the public finance discipline” before. In 2019, the Regional Adjudication Committee at the RIO in Krakow issued a statement in which it ruled that “financial irregularities” occurred “as part of the implementation of the investment task”. There was no penalty, because the committee decided that the short term in office was a sufficient justification. Another offense of Głuchowski is that he “did not exercise proper supervision over the employees of the institution who led to financial losses”, which the same committee was to confirm at the beginning of 2019:
The Adjudicating Committee directly stated that the head of the unit did not properly secure public funds, introduced a mechanism of no control of the funds spent at the elementary level, which allowed for the occurrence of abuses.
The statement also reads that Głuchowski was to “spread false information about the theater”, because he reported in the media that his institution did not submit applications for funding to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2022, and they have four projects submitted to the ministry in their papers. In the end, the worst thing was left. Maria Peszek’s concert.
What do officials dislike at Maria Peszek’s concert?
On April 4, Maria Peszek’s concert is to take place at the Słowacki Theater as part of the tour “J * BIĘ IS EVERYTHING. SPRING OVER!” The program will feature songs from the artist’s latest album of the year, enthusiastically received by fans and hailed as the album of the year by the Polityka weekly, “AVE MARIA”. There are 10 songs on the disc, including the first single “Virunga”, which the singer dedicated to LGBT + people, or the song that gave the name of the tour, “J * bię it all”. This particular song is a love song, which tells a surreal story happening on an island that is not really there, but anyone can create it for themselves. It all starts with the words’ I’d like to buy you an island at the end of the world, you know. The three of us would be there, just you and me and the dog ‘- on Spotify alone, the song has over a million plays.
The Marshal’s Office comments in its statement – “The concert program includes performance of pieces with profanity”. According to officials, the contract for the concert “is unfavorable due to the image of the Theater”. It was also problematic that the title of the tour “J. Even when it was removed, there was information” about the promotion of the ‘AVE MARIA’ album, from which the songs to be presented during the concert, contain vulgar content and insulting. “And this, in the opinion of the Board of the Małopolska Region, does not agree:
The organization of such events on the Main Stage of the Teatr im. Juliusz Słowacki in Krakow, aspiring to be called the National Stage, strikes at the good name of the Theater and its image. It should be emphasized that in the activities of the Theater to date, the concerts of popular music, if they took place at all, were definitely incidental. The decision of the director of the theater to organize an openly iconoclastic and confrontational concert is all the more astonishing.
Protests in defense of Głuchowski
When it was announced that Głuchowski was to be dismissed, theater employees and representatives of the theater community organized a protest. The theater staff also wrote a letter to the voivodeship marshal in defense of Głuchowski, which was read out during a press conference. “Krzysztof Głuchowski is in the middle of his second term in office. The theater under his management achieves artistic successes, develops, undergoes renovation, goes through a difficult time of a pandemic, and all this takes place with respect for workers’ rights, as well as in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. Therefore, the emerging information about the alleged plans to remove Director Głuchowski from his position raises our greatest concern “- the signatories emphasized.
Andrzej Grabowski spoke during a meeting with the media: “Due to my age, I have experienced many management changes, but I have never encountered the whole team defending the director. About half an hour ago we received an email that such a meeting would be held today. We were asked to do so. that everyone who can come to the theater. And see – we are not only here, who have just played the show “- reported the portal LoveKraków.
During the conference, Głuchowski himself emphasized:
I do not know when and how I allegedly violated the good name of the theater, how I contributed to irregularities in the tenders. The mere fact of submitting an application to the Regional Audit Chamber does not prove that I have committed any breach of public finance discipline or that I am guilty of any irregularities … This is how art dies.
Another protest took place on Saturday, February 20, in front of the Słowacki Theater in Krakow. About 200 people chanted “The theater is ours”, and the actors associated with the institution read letters of support from theaters all over Poland, as well as from public figures.
