The Spring Soundone of the biggest music festivals in Barcelonaat 2023will also be held in Madrid. It will be held on two consecutive weekends: the first in Barcelona, the days June 1, 2 and 3, at the Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona-Sant Adrià de Besòs and the next in Madrid, from 8 to 10, in the City of Rock in Arganda del Rey.
An advertisement can attract the attention of music fans, since Barcelona – Primavera Sound is one of the benchmark events every year in Barcelona. But this decision is generated by the tensions between the Barcelona City Council and the organization of the festival.
The discrepancies between both actors increased when the organization asked the City Council, at the end of 2021, being able to celebrate the festival in a two-end format of the week to alleviate the losses caused by the pandemic.
Despite the fact that from the council they were in negotiations with Primavera Sound considering this option, the residents of the surroundings of the Fòrum de Barcelona were against the proposal. Not only that, they created the platform Stop Concerts Forum to stop the expansion of concerts.
Those affected by Primavera Sound complain about the bottles, the noise, the dirt and even theft. For this reason, when Mayor Ada Colau began negotiations with the organization to hold the festival over two weekends, they flatly refused.
But this did not turn out to be the only impediment, Gabi Ruiz, one of the directors of the festival ad in an interview in ‘La Vanguardia’ that if they did not reach an agreement with the organization they would leave Barcelona: “If the City Council does not want our festival model, we go to another city”.
“At this time, the City Council is not making any effort for a proposal like the one we have on the table for 2023; they don’t even want it,” Ruiz said in harsh statements in which he assured that even theis they wanted to “increase the price 17 times” through space.
Spring Sound 2023
After failing to reach an agreement to hold a second weekend in Barcelona, the organization will hold the 2023 edition in Madrid as well. Mayor Isabel Díaz Ayuso shared her enthusiasm for the project this morning on her Twitter profile: “Great news: @Primavera_Sound 2023 will be part of this exciting new stage that Madrid is experiencing. There are more and more cultural, gastronomic or tourist projects who choose this free, open and thriving region”.
From the Barcelona City Council, Jordi Martí Grau, Councilor for Culture, Education, Science and Community, has also shared his opinion on networks: “This is good news, Barcelona continues to export the festivals created in the city around the world. Congratulations @Primavera_Sound and on the whole team!
To find out how this battle for Primaveral Sound ends, we will have to wait to see the reception of the public in Madrid, the repercussion that all these plot twists have in Barcelona and the organization’s negotiations with the city councils. Fortunately, with music these battles become more bearable.
