Family drama with country music in the background – sounds like a good show idea? The creators of “Monarch”, whose main characters will be members of the Roman dynasty, followed this path. Dottie (Susan Sarandon) and Albie (Trace Adkins) are Americans’ favorite artists, whose children have inherited a knack for playing and singing. We get to know the ancestors of the music empire when Dottie makes headlines due to his serious illness. The woman prepares to hand over the crown of the country queen to her eldest daughter Nicolette (Anna Friel). It will soon turn out that there will be no question of a peaceful transfer of power.
“Monarch”. The guitar is playing, but it’s not the most fun
Young country performers dream of going under the wing of Monarch – it is the title record label run by Luke Roman (Joshua Sasse), loved by his mother and hated by his father. Everyone knows his parents. For the outside world, Dottie and Albie are role models not only in terms of their artistic output, but also in life. They composed songs for themselves, sang on stage with children, organized special meetings for fans with a family atmosphere – in short: a real American idyll.
Viewers quickly discover that behind the Roman successes there is more than just the power of love. Dark secrets will begin to emerge as Nicolette, the new queen, will have to come face to face with fan expectations and a ruthless music industry. However, the most difficult duels will be fought inside the Roman empire. How will the younger sister of Gigi (Beth Ditto), who is the apple of her father’s eye and has undisclosed vocal talent, behave? How far will father and son disagreements go, and how will they affect Monarch? What is Albie hiding from her family? We will be looking for answers to all these questions from the premiere episode.
“Monarch” is based on the brainchild of debuting screenwriter and producer Melissa London Hilfers, who has abandoned her legal profession to make her dreams come true in Hollywood. Work on the series started in 2019 – two years later it was announced that Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel, as well as Trace Adkins and Beth Ditto, known mainly for their musical activities, had joined the cast. It is worth adding that in the flashback scenes we will see Eva Amurri, Sarandon’s daughter, who will play the role of Dottie, who is several decades younger. In addition, the screen will show, among others Meagan Holder, Inigo Pascual, Martha Higareda and Emma Milani.
Almost everyone on board “Monarch” is good not only as an actor, but also vocally. There will be songs written especially for the series – the first of them, “The Card You Gamble”, can be listened to online from the beginning of January.
Filming for “Monarch” began in the fall of 2021. Originally, the premiere in the United States was planned for the end of January, but due to the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the show’s debut has been postponed until the fall. Fox has high hopes for the new production – after many successful musical productions like “Glee” and “Empire”, “Monarch” has a good chance to extend this streak.
