TVN7 finally with a license. One of the members of the National Broadcasting Council finally changed his mind

Witold Kołodziejski, Teresa Bochwic, Elżbieta Więcławska-Sauk and Andrzej Sabatowski voted for the extension of the TVN7 terrestrial license, and prof. Janusz Kawecki.

KRRiTV extended TVN7’s license, otherwise satellite TV remained

For the proposal to pass, a majority of 4/5 of the votes is needed. KRRiT consists of five members. In earlier votes, Sabatowski was against the extension of the license. Officially, the National Broadcasting Council has delayed making a decision on this matter for so long due to doubts related to the ownership structure of TVN, which belongs to the American company Discovery.

If the National Broadcasting Council did not extend TVN7’s license until February 25, the channel would be able to broadcast via satellite under the Dutch license it has recently applied for. However, it would disappear from the MUX-2 terrestrial multiplex, which covers almost the entire territory of Poland. The National Broadcasting Council could then organize a competition for this place.

A similar situation occurred last year in the case of the renewal of the license for the TVN24 channel. At that time, an information campaign was organized, the appeals of, among others, the journalistic community for the extension of the license and protests in the streets. Now also the KRRiTV was to receive about 15 thousand. letters in the interest of TVN7.

The application to the National Broadcasting Council to extend the license for TVN7 for another 10 years was submitted by TVN Discovery Group on December 23, 2020, so it took an exceptionally long time to process it. So far, there has been no case in which the National Broadcasting Council has not extended an existing terrestrial license despite the broadcaster meeting all the conditions.
