The portrait of a family of Catalan peach trees captivated the Berlinale, which gave its Golden Bear to the film “Alcarràs”directed by the Catalan filmmaker Carla Simón, as an exponent of “a cinema in which tenderness and anger at the situation of the small farmer come together”.
The jury of the Berlinale, chaired by the Indian-American director M. Night Shyamalan, valued in “Alcarràs”, filmed in Catalan, the “extraordinary capacity” of these actors, whom Simón recruited from popular festivals in the region where it develops”.
The Grand Jury Prize went to the South Korean Hong Sangsoo, for “The Novelist’s Film”,
The Jury’s Silver Bear went to Bolivian Natalia López Gallardo, for her Mexican-Argentine production “Manto de Gemas”.
The Silver for best direction went to the French Claire Denis, for “Avec amour et acharnement”, and the award for best performance went to the German-Turkish Meltem Kaptan for “Rabiye Kurnaz versus George W. Bush”, directed by the German Andreas Dresen.
