Caifanes continues to explore music with the same enthusiasm of his beginnings

With more learning but without ceasing to be those young people who transgressed the rock scene in the 80s, the Mexican rock band Caifanes continues to explore music with the same hunger thanks to his new single, It’s only youand a tour that keeps them “existing”.

“We were born playing, it’s our nature, otherwise you didn’t exist. It was the way to promote, to get to know you, to learn to play better and better, to understand that you also had to make new songs. Playing is simply existing for us ”, he reflects this Tuesday in an interview with Efe Saúl Hernández, the vocalist of the band.

With Caifanes concerts qualified as ritualsHernández explains that the group has maintained “a very strong concert-ally relationship (its audience)”, which has allowed them to have countless presentations since they met again as a band in 2011.

In 2020, the pandemic meant a break in their live performances and more than anything else, losing this face-to-face musical experience was the most difficult thing for the musicians.

Nevertheless, They were part of the artists who dared to return to the stage from the various formats that emerged during the health emergency, among them, the so-called self-concerts (with the public on board their cars) and later with the public from boxes.

“It was not the same as jumping in the middle of the theater, or the auditorium. It has been very exciting to come back”, says the drummer of the group, Alfonso Andre, about the official return of Caifanes, which took place on February 3 with a presentation at the Fox Theater in Oakland, United States, which precedes their visit to Mexico, where they will perform on February 18 and 19 in Guadalajara and Mexico City, respectively.

time to create

The group, famous for creating hymns like Don’t let…, The cell that explodes and Kill me because I’m dyingcontinues to be eager to explore new sounds to rediscover her current essence.

They have achieved this by staying true to their great passion: music.

“Part of us is still the same as when we started, I hope we have learned something along the way, but there is still a lot of that same desire to explore, make music and investigate”, relates André.

“It’s such an infinite world, in music you can always find new things. We are still in love with what we do and it is amazing to be able to be in a job that is not a job, but a pleasure”, adds the drummer.

It took three years for the group to show It’s only you, a song, out of at least ten that they are already preparing, in which they criticize the current media world that they consider has been “dehumanizing” societies, with which they seek to remember and exalt people’s individuality.

It’s only you he knocks on the door and says: hey you also exist. He believes in yourself, open the door and go out into the street”, says Hernández, composer of most of the band’s songs.

Without ties or pressure to produce music from any label, Caifanes today follows his instincts and releases music when it seems appropriate.

Without an agenda and adapting to the new way in which music is distributed, such as digital platforms.

“Before you opened the vinyl and sat down to listen to the record, that has been lost in music. This fact that for 100 pesos (about 5 dollars) you can rent all the music that has been made in the history of humanity detracts a lot from this value of music. But finally we like music, not the music business”, replies André.

For Hernández, the best time to write and create is in the morning, after having a coffee, but he agrees with the rest of the group in that this happens when everyone enters into a harmony that invites them to creation.

“It’s more like a feeling than a decision. It is something that we are beginning to feel and I think we are all sharing it (…) It is those shared emotions, it may be instinct, or simply the moment, the feeling that you already have to do something, ”describes the singer.

During the tour, the musicians will try to please their fans and those who followed the path of Jaguares, a group that was formed with most of the members of Caifanes in 1996 after internal problems.

So far they have recorded three of the more than ten songs that they promise to show and meanwhile, from February to June, they will remain active on their tour of the United States, Mexico and Colombia. (AND)
