The life of Alauda Ruiz de Azua (Barakaldo, 1978) changed completely five years ago, when she became a mother without – let us not forget – making her stop being, among many other things, a daughter. In “Five Little Wolves”the first feature film that she writes and directs, Ruiz de Azúa has turned her reflections on motherhood, but also on family relationships, conciliation and care, frames without epic and glory, “almost background noise”, as she explains, ” but essential.
“We take care of our parents, we even become their parents during their old age, and yet, there will always be moments when a look from them transports us to the insecure adolescent we were or causes us to need their warm and irrational family hug. We are children of back and forth,” explains the filmmaker.

Filming of ‘Five Little Wolves’
“Five Little Wolves”, in which EITB participates, tells the story of Amaia (Laia Costa), who, shortly after becoming a mother, decides to return to her parents’ house, in a town on the Basque coast, so that they help her take care of the baby and take care of yourself. But her mother will fall ill, and Amaia will have to take care of everyone.
We spoke with Alauda Ruiz de Azúa shortly before this Friday, February 11, she shows the world for the first time “Cinco lobitos”, a participant in the Panorama section of the Berlinalewhich offers films with the aim of generating debate and material for discussion.
The German festival began yesterday, and will end on February 20.
Zorionak, Alauda! How have you digested seeing yourself at the Berlinale with your first feature film? How did you receive the news?
Eskerrik asko! I got the news in the mixing room and was jumping for joy. I’m still digesting it. It’s like seeing a dream come true.
You have already been through many festivals with your short films. How do you experience a film festival as a filmmaker?
You live with great enthusiasm. Berlinale is a festival that I have been following for as long as I can remember as a cinephile. I have grown with their awards, their choices…
For me it is a reference, and, suddenly, seeing your selected film in a place like this generates a lot of emotion.

Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and Laia Costa
What do you like the most and the least about an experience like this?
The whole trip is being precious: the joy, living it as a team, the reunions, the warmth that the people of the festival transmit…
Perhaps the worst thing is the rush to deliver all the material, teasers… As a director, you always want to take care of everything in detail and you always ask for one more hour a day.
What will be your agenda in Berlin?
On February 11 we premiered the film with an audience in the room. Then, we will attend the press conference and various interviews.
What do you think a showcase like the one offered by the Berlin festival can bring to the film?
It is giving you a lot. She has put “Cinco Lobitos” (Lullaby) on the map. She has opened the door for him to reach many more people and media.
The Panorama section, in which “Five Little Wolves” is framed, offers films “that present debates and material for discussion.” I suppose that is the vocation of your film. What impulse set in motion all the years of work behind “Cinco lobitos”?
“Cinco Lobitos” can suggest an interesting debate on conciliation today, on the family model that we want to build and how it affects us socially and emotionally.
The drive was to be a new mother looking for a story about what the arrival of a baby means. And the fact of not finding much story about it was what motivated me to write the film.

‘Five wolves’
When can we see “Five Little Wolves”?
The premiere of “Cinco Lobitos” is scheduled for May 20, 2022 in theaters. Wishing you can go see it!
How do you live the process of delivering to the public a material in which so much work has been put?
It is turning out to be a very beautiful stage of the trip. No time or other pressure. Just enjoy the emotions that the film generates. Verify that those first intuitions you had have taken shape and reach others.
What future do you wish for the film?
I wish you a future full of spectators, smiles and emotions. Hopefully some new mom sees her, and she feels a little less lonely for a moment.
