“Gladiator”: a storyline that engages

What is “Gladiator” about? The plot of this movie is not very complicated, although the picture itself is definitely worth watching. While some criticize the film for its historical distortions, it should nevertheless be viewed as a costume film. Apart from historical characters, there are also fictional characters, and the content of the film does not reflect real events, although it refers to some facts. The action of “Gladiator” takes place in the 2nd century AD, when the general of the Roman army, Maximus Decimus Meridius, returns from a victorious expedition against the Germans. The reigning emperor, Marcus Aurelius, wants the power over the Roman empire to be taken over by Maximus after his death, as the one who could restore the republican system to the state. The jealous son of Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, is ready to do much to thwart the plans of his ailing father. So he kills him so that no one knows about the emperor’s will. However, Commodus does not limit himself to announcing himself the new ruler of the Roman Empire – he also issues the order to kill Maximus and his family. The general miraculously manages to escape, but when he shows up in the family estate, he finds ruins. Grieving after the loss of his wife and son, the man ends up in the hands of slavers who sell Maximus to the gladiators’ school. The former soldier turns out to be quite a skilled fighter. He is doing better and better in the arena, and his undoubted talent is noticed by its owner, Proximo. It is he who prompts Maximus to fight spectacularly, which will make him famous and allow him to gain popularity with the crowd. The gladiator, seized by the desire for revenge, does everything to win the recognition of the crowd. Over time, he begins to fight in Rome, and his performances are becoming more and more popular. Maximus knows that the will of the people is more powerful than the power of the emperor, so wishing to avenge the death of his loved ones, he does everything to become the greatest hero of the empire. He is most popular because of his bravery – it also leads to the meeting between Maximus and Commodus. When Marcus Aurelius ‘son realizes that the mysterious gladiator is his mortal enemy, he organizes Maximus’ more and more difficult battles, hoping that he will die in one of them. To the despair of Commodus, Maximus is gaining popularity more than the emperor. Will he, however, be able to avenge the deaths of his wife and son? It’s worth watching The Gladiator to find out the answer to this question.

Maximus Decimus Meridius is of course a fictional character, although it is assumed that this character was modeled on Marcus Aurelius’ favorite general, Mark Nonius Macrinus. Also fictional characters are Tiberius Gracchus and Proximo. In turn, the authentic historical figures are Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, Lucilla or Lucius (although under a changed name) – grandson of the emperor, son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus.
