Ingrid Bergman discovered her passion in her teenage years. She started out as an extra. A contented 15-year-old girl with 10 crowns in her hand was returning from the Stockholm film set, where she played the role of a dying girl. Even then, she felt that she would achieve success as an actress. Her father, known for his sensitivity and love of art, passed on her love for acting. He deeply believed in his daughter and tried to motivate her at every step.
The beginning of Ingrid Bergman’s career. She did not manage to show her talent to her mother
This respected Swedish actress was born in 1915. Her father raised her because her mother passed away when the girl was only 2 years old. Justus Bergman became her greatest support. He loved to photograph little Ingrid. The loving relationship between father and daughter was cut short in 1927 when the man died. The future actress went to relatives.
Already at the school stage, she showed interest in acting. She took part in numerous performances and film productions. The choice of career was clear – thanks to her self-confidence, talent and naturalness, she got into the Royal Theater School in Stockholm. She quickly delighted the lecturers, so she did not have to wait for the start of the third year of studies like other students to shine on the stage. She performed in the theater much earlier. Her film debut was “Munkbrogreven”, where she played a clever maid, secretly selling drinks at a hotel. However, this production did not bring her much publicity, which she wanted so much. The world heard about the new character on the stage exactly a year later, after the premiere of “Intermezzo”. This time, Ingrid became a pianist with a feeling of a busy, elderly violinist. After this role, she received more film offers and her career took off. Ingrid grew loud in. Such a breakthrough in the life of the young actress initiated a number of changes. The rising star decided to end her education at the acting school. It was not education that was in the foreground now, but fame. Ingrid attracted more and more media attention. Of course, she focused on acting in new films. A novelty in her life was also love – the actress met the dentist Peter Lindström, whom she married in 1937. They had a daughter together named Pia. Her birth, however, did not interrupt her mother’s career for long, because her husband Ingrid was in charge of professional matters. Together, they took the appropriate steps for future film productions.
Changing the image for working in Hollywood? The producer urged the actress to abandon her surname and metamorphose her eyebrows
Which star does not dream of reaching Hollywood? Ingrid objected to that. She didn’t know the English language well, and besides, she had a different type of beauty than the then popular one. However, it entered a new dimension at the instigation of producer David O. Selznick. Finally, at the age of 24, she moved to the USA with her family. It was suggested that her image be completely changed. There were teeth, eyebrows and … the name that needed to be improved. How to stay yourself in such a demanding world? Ingrid started her career thanks to being natural, and she wanted to stay that way. She rejected any suggestions for corrections and proudly insisted that she would stay what she was before arriving in the States. The career of the actress was gaining momentum. Ingrid made her next dream come true by performing on Broadway. In 1942, the premiere of the movie “Casablanca” took place, where the actress starred with Humphrey Bogart. Hollywood loved her acting and her specific type of beauty. Soon after, she became an icon. Productions such as “Urzeczona” or “Extinguishing Flame” made it even more popular. Playing the lead role in “Joan of Arc” made viewers perceive Ingrid as a saint. The actress, however, vehemently denied this. In interviews, she tried to emphasize her ordinariness.
Fame is booming and marriage is falling apart. One decision changed everything
“Swedish gift to Hollywood” this, in the opinion of critics, is a very grateful and well-deserved title. It can be concluded that Ingrid fulfilled her innermost acting dreams. Unfortunately, it was not successful on every level. Her marriage was hanging in the balance. Due to professional issues, she did not spend as much time with her husband as she used to. Perhaps for this reason she opened up to other men.
In 1949, Ingrid’s heart was stolen by the film “Rome, the City Open”, directed by Robert Rossellini. The actress wrote a letter to the director, in which she informed him about her willingness to cooperate. The Italian artist came from a wealthy family. He was interested in cinema from his childhood, because his father designed such buildings. Watching the movies frequently resulted in the emergence of an outstanding director who was valued for his style and quality. He received a letter from Ingrid on his birthday. It was an honor for him to undertake a joint project with a famous actress. The artists met for the first time in Paris. They discussed the backstage of “Stromboli, God’s land”. The next meeting was in the USA, where Roberto Rossellini was finalizing the financial issues. Pretty soon, an affair developed between Ingrid and the director. At that time, the actress did not know that this step would destroy her previous efforts in the world of show business. The woman made a choice. She chose a married director. She left for Italy with her lover, and left a letter to her husband and daughter.
In it, she asked for forgiveness and at the same time announced her will to stay with Robert in Europe. Nobody expected such a blow. The news of the abandonment of the family and the affair soon made headlines. From then on, Ingrid was called “the sinner.” The situation was not improved by the fact that the actress was carrying the director’s child. Hell has begun for Ingrid in the United States. Viewers wished her child dead, and Senator Edward C. Johnson insisted that the star be stripped of American citizenship. He believed that such an actress brings shame to the nation. The lovers managed to end their previous relationships, but even after closing all formalities, they did not get a moment of peace from the media. After they got married in Mexico, they still faced acts of hatred. The fans were still shocked. How can a woman, previously compared to an angel, suddenly leave her family for a lover? The couple, controversial for them, had three children. Their intimacy, however, waned when Robert’s film productions ceased to be lucrative. With the financial problems increasing, Ingrid still hoped for a career boom.
Finally, in 1955, Ingrid stopped working with the director. However, this is not the end of unpleasant changes in her life. It turned out that while working on the film in India, Roberto was having an affair with the screenwriter. The woman was pregnant with him. The director’s betrayal was a huge blow to Ingrid. She divorced her husband in 1957. After some time, she began to make a life with another man. She married Lars Schmidt for the third time. The ex-husband, however, took his toll and wanted them to stay with their father at all costs. Eventually, Ingrid came to an understanding with him. Soon after, she began to achieve acting successes again. She won an Oscar for her role in the movie “Anastasia”. She also made peace with Roberto, as evidenced by a party organized by the woman in honor of his 70th birthday. It cannot be denied that the lives of these two were full of twists, which were brought to an end by death – Ingrid passed away in 1982 due to breast cancer, and Roberto passed away five years earlier due to a heart attack. To this day, we remember them as one of the loudest scandals.
